What To Pack For Your Next Winter Holiday

Issue 118

When you’re packing for a summer holiday, it’s often easier to travel light. All of your shorts, t-shirts, and thin cotton dresses are lightweight enough to fit into a single case – with plenty of scope for layering.

But what if you’re going away for winter? All of those heavy clothes will make it necessary to be a little bit more discerning. Let’s take a look at how you might approach your packing.

Layering Like a Pro: Building the Perfect Winter Travel Wardrobe

Your winter wardrobe will need to be built around a few choice items and fabrics. The right layering system can help you to be a little more versatile, and to don and shed jackets and coats as you move from a freezing street to a toasty indoor environment, like a restaurant. This is even more convenient when it comes to things like knitted accessories.

Style Meets Function: Outfits That Work for City Strolls and Mountain Views

You don’t need to compromise on style to find an outfit that can cope with the cold weather. What matters is that any given outfit should be right for the environment. If you’re going skiing, then you’ll need a waterproof jacket; if you just want to take a stroll around a city, then a gilet might be a great, versatile choice. For many, a decent selection of women’s dresses goes a long way.

Arguably your most important items are your boots. Pick a pair that can cope with a variety of conditions underfoot, but that won’t look out of place when you go out for the evening. If you’re going to be on your feet all day, then this might be even more important.

Beyond the Basics: Accessories and Essentials You Shouldn’t Forget

Not all of your fashion-related packing will be clothing. You’ll also need to think about your approach to skincare and beauty, especially if your skin is prone to drying out during spells of cold weather. The right lip balm, or moisturiser, might make a big difference to the way you look and feel – but they won’t take up much space in your wardrobe. The same applies to your tech gear. A pair of earbuds can make your time on the plane much more bearable, while the right brightly-coloured bobble hat might make you easier to spot in a crowded museum or bar.

If you know that you’re going to be spending some time out in upmarket restaurants and other formal venues, then your choice of dress might make a big difference. Pick something that makes you look and feel amazing, but don’t forget to think about how it will stand up to the weather.
