There are some venues that become part of the North East landscape, woven into our memories through business meetings, celebrations and family occasions. The Grand Hotel Gosforth Park is undoubtedly one of them.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the Newcastle landmark has welcomed generations of guests through its doors, and for me, a recent visit brought back memories of my early days working in media during the 1990s.
Back then, like many young professionals finding their feet, I attended (doe-eyed and dark-haired!) many events and meetings at the hotel, so returning all these years later carried a certain sense of nostalgia.
Set within extensive parkland on the outskirts of Newcastle and conveniently located just off the A1, the hotel remains an impressive presence and a popular destination for leisure guests, business travellers and special occasion-ers alike.
This time, however, the purpose was far more relaxed: sampling the hotel’s new monthly Sunday Lunch offering and, as it happened, kicking off my ‘birthday week’ in suitably leisurely fashion.
From the moment we arrived, the warm welcome set the tone for the afternoon. Friendly staff greeted us with real enthusiasm before showing us through to the dining area, which was smart, comfortable and well appointed without feeling overly formal.
The atmosphere struck exactly the right balance. There was a relaxed buzz around the room, families and friends exchanging anecdotes, while attentive service ensured everything ran smoothly. It felt unhurried, allowing guests to settle in, switch off and enjoy proper British food in pleasant parkland surroundings.
My wife Lisa chose the Beetroot and Apple Salad to start, followed by the Feather Blade of Beef, while I opted for the Tomato and Red Pepper Soup before moving on to the traditional Topside of Beef.
The starters arrived beautifully presented and packed with flavour. My soup was rich, warming and full of depth, while the beetroot and apple combination offered a fresh, vibrant alternative. Both provided an excellent beginning to the meal and nicely complemented the first bite of Autumn air.
Sunday lunch rises or fall on the quality of its roast, and there was to be no disappointment here. The beef was tender and cooked well, accompanied by all the traditional trimmings you’d hope to find on a proper Sunday plate.
What impressed most was the sense that this was honest, well-executed food designed to be enjoyed rather than overcomplicated. Sometimes that’s exactly what a Sunday lunch should be.
Equally noteworthy was the value on offer. At £24 for two courses and £29 for three courses, the menu represents excellent value, particularly considering the quality of food, hearty portions and attentive service.
Families are also well catered for, with the hotel’s ‘Little Roast Menu’ available at £10 for two courses and £15 for three courses, making it an appealing option for those looking to enjoy a traditional Sunday outing without stretching the budget.
As the hotel commemorates six decades in business, there is something fitting about introducing experiences that encourage people to gather, connect and make new memories. While much has changed since my first visits in the 1990s, the essence of good hospitality remains the same, and the Grand Hotel Gosforth Park still understands how to make guests feel welcome.
Our afternoon passed wonderfully, helped by friendly staff, hearty food and a relaxed atmosphere that encouraged us to linger a little longer than planned.
Sometimes the simplest pleasures can be a meander back down memory lane, and this was one of those occasions: good food, great service and a reminder that some institutions such as this, continue to stand the test of time.
