Footprint Strengthened At Tilly, Bailey & Irvine

Issue 119

For almost 200 years, it has been trusted to deliver for clients across the North East and beyond.

And this year, Tilly Bailey & Irvine (TBI Law) strengthened its footprint within our region.

One of the North East’s best-known law firms, TBI Law is also one of the region’s biggest, employing over 200 staff.

Founded in Hartlepool back in 1842, the award-winning firm has expanded since then with offices in Wynyard, Stockton and Barnard Castle.

Now TBI has launched a base in Wearside, after it acquired the respected Sunderland practice, Scanlans.

For a company nearing its second century, the acquisition is just one-way in which TBI is continuing to grow.

Strong internal investment. Headline-worthy wins. Expertise across the field.

And an unwavering commitment to do their best for clients.

That commitment was recently exemplified by Associate Solicitor Annalisa Moscardini.

Her client, Justin Plummer, had spent 28 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. It was one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in modern Britain – and one Annalisa helped overturn.

She played a pivotal role in presenting fresh evidence to the Criminal Cases Review Commission, before Justin’s unsafe conviction was quickly quashed in the Court of Appeal.

“Annalisa’s hard work and sheer determination were crucial in bringing this case back before the courts,” said Neil Taylor, Partner and Head of the Criminal Defence team at Tilly Bailey & Irvine in Hartlepool.

“She embodies the qualities that set TBI’s legal team apart – tenacity, expertise and an unwavering commitment to our clients – and that’s why we are trusted to handle the most important cases because we deliver results where others can’t.”

Additionally, TBI Law’s expert Personal Injury team is also helping clients involved in two major scandals: The Infected Blood Inquiry and victims from the Medomsley Detention Centre, where over 1,800 people have reported sexual or physical abuse.

“Our team is regularly entrusted with some of the most high-profile and important cases, because not only do we get results, but also because we fight tooth-and-nail for our clients,” said Kay Ditcham, Partner and Head of Personal Injury at TBI.

But TBI’s impact isn’t just felt in high-profile cases.

From house moves and wills, to criminal defence or legal support when navigating a complex business issue, the company is perfectly positioned to deliver the results it is known for.

Heading into 2026, those results are set to continue, while the acquisition of Scanlans resulted in 15 experienced staff being integrated into TBI’s ranks, significantly improving the wealth of knowledge available for clients – particularly in criminal defence, for which Scanlans had long held a glowing reputation for.

However, it also meant new services were available for clients on Wearside, including personal injury and family law.

And with five offices now up and running throughout the North East, Kirstey Maloney, Partner and Head of Family Law, said the road ahead looks bright at TBI Law.

“Our growth has been fuelled by results and people,” she added.

“Not just our colleagues but our clients and the communities we proudly serve.

“We have been thrilled to add Sunderland to that list this year, and as we near 200 years in business, that focus on results and people remains unchanged.”
