Elisian - Helping Energy Companies Deliver

Issue 127

North East software developers for the global energy sector.

When Ian Elcoat left university, he wanted to make full use of his software development skills, but it wasn’t until 2016 when he finally realised his dreams. He established Elisian which, over the last decade has steadily grown to become one of the most trusted software specialists in the UK, particularly when it comes to working with energy companies across oil and gas, offshore wind, chemicals and into the future as the UK adopts hydrogen and other renewableenergy industries. Ian believes that as the UK adopts further nuclear power, the solutions Elisian provide will be well suited for this sector, especially with the advancement of small reactors which can safely power small towns and even trading estates.

But everything really took off when BP got in touch.

“BP have been heavily involved in oil and gas exploration for many years, and they wanted me to look into how they could manage their workers’ shift system,” said Ian. “The majority of their staff on oil and gas platforms work 12-hour shifts which means a job simply rolls from one person or team to another. They wanted to electronically track data between shifts because, up to that point, everything had been logged manually. From then, our specially developed piece of software was so successful that they asked what else we could do for them…and the rest is history.”

The value of the software which Elisian has developed is that it can transfer from sector to sector because it focusses on helping improve safety, reliability, compliance and the management of industrial assets, something which every business and industry needs to do…small or large. Replacing traditional paper-based and slow computer systems to allow companies to control and monitor high-risk work activities digitally, is a key factor of the Elisian solution. The system records each stage of any job, from the initial request and authorisation through to completion, creating a detailed audit trail. This can help companies demonstrate that work is being carried out safely and in line with regulatory requirements.

“Because our software monitors a job from start to finish, it builds a history of regular maintenance tasks and allows operators to schedule maintenance, manage risk and reduce unplanned downtime while constantly ensuring the condition and safety of industrial assets. These include management of change, operational risk assessments, joint integrity management and monitoring of leaks or other signs of potential problems. In a nutshell, the software will tell you when everything from electrical, plumbing, general maintenance and operational tasks need to be done to maintain safety. It simplifies decision making because if you skip those tasks, you are increasing the levels of danger. Predictive maintenance keeps things simple and is more costeffective in the long term. It also gives you confidence that work is being done when it needs to be done.”

Elisian has a proud record of retaining customers, having worked with their longest standing customer for over 15 years and because of such trusted relationships have not had a customer leave them. Elisian’s customer footprint is based around the North Sea, with customers both onshore and offshore across the UK and mainland Europe., proving that even though Elisian began life providing software solutions for the oil and gas industry, their processes are easily transferred to other businesses. Elisian, based on the Cobalt Business Park on North Tyneside, is a North East success story…a software development business using digital technology to make energy operations safer, more efficient and easier to monitor.

A North East success story with a global reach.
