Protecting Your Business Data Within Microsoft 365 And Beyond

Issue 67

Protecting important business assets is vital for organisations of any size. However, this goal can be compromised by both external threats, such as ransomware, and internal threats, such as accidental deletion of data. In these scenarios it is essential to have an effective data backup solution in place to ensure that these assets are not lost. With Mimecast reporting that 92% of organisations have seen ransomware delivered via email attachments the need for organisations to invest in disaster recovery and data backup cannot be overstated.

Whilst it is commonly believed that data saved in cloud solutions, such as Microsoft 365, is automatically protected, this is not entirely accurate. Whilst Microsoft have some responsibilities to protect your data, if this data is removed due to accidental or malicious deletion they cannot guarantee restoration of this data. Microsoft, like many Software as a Service (SaaS) vendors, promotes a shared responsibility model. This model requires end-users to ensure they meet security requirements that exist beyond Microsoft 365’s native capabilities. This is often where thirdparty solutions come into use, with Microsoft’s own Services Agreement recommending regular backup of content using third party services. Many of Synergi’s customers are now using SaaS Protection to secure their data within Microsoft 365. This technology helps protect business data from cyber security threats by providing a comprehensive backup and recovery for cloud data living within Microsoft 365. SaaS Backup Protection, at its core, allows organisations to access, control, and protect their data stored in the cloud. It provides businesses with the peace of mind that business-critical data is well protected (3 backups per day) and held outside the primary Microsoft 365 service should the worst happen. For on-premises or collocated servers, a singular business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) solution can allow businesses to prevent data loss and minimise downtime. With capabilities such as cloud backup, continuous data protection, screenshot boot verification, ransomware scanning and minutes to recover in the event of a DR event, businesses can now trust a single solution for backup and DR. In today’s business climate, it is vital that businesses can restore operations as quickly as possible after any service disruption and investing in a BCDR solution provides the tools that make this possible. Where data protection is concerned, there seems to be a wide-spread lack of understanding surrounding what security measures businesses are responsible for within a shared responsibility model. This is understandable as data protection and security in the cloud can be complex and difficult to navigate. Working with an IT managed services partner can help your business understand its responsibilities and provide guidance to achieve your required outcomes.
