Ottoman Beds: 4 Mistakes First-time Buyers Make In The Uk

Issue 122

Ottoman beds are one of the most practical bedroom upgrades you can make. All that space under the mattress, typically four times more than a standard four-drawer divan, will finally be put to good use.

But first-time buyers make some surprisingly costly errors that lead to returns, wasted delivery fees, or a bed that simply doesn’t work in their room. Here’s where it gets interesting: most of these mistakes are completely avoidable once you know what to look for.

1. Ignoring the Mattress Weight Limit

Ottoman beds rely on gas-lift pistons to raise and hold the mattress in place. Those pistons are rated for a specific weight range, and if your mattress is too heavy, the mechanism will struggle to open smoothly, or won’t stay open safely at all.

Most standard ottoman frames come with two pistons. Divan-style ottomans, on the other hand, typically use four, which makes them better suited to heavier mattresses. Piston strength is measured in Newtons (N), and for a chunky pocket-sprung or hybrid mattress, you’ll want something in the 600N to 800N range at minimum.

Before you buy, check the product listing for the recommended mattress weight. If you already own a heavy mattress, match the bed to it, don’t assume any ottoman will cope.

2. Picking the Wrong Lift Orientation

When browsing UK ottoman beds, you’ll notice two lift options: end lift and side lift. This detail gets overlooked surprisingly often, and it matters more than most buyers expect.

An end-lift ottoman opens from the foot of the bed, so you need clear floor space there to actually access the storage.

A side-lift opens from the left or right, which works far better in narrower rooms or if your bed sits up against a wall on one side.

If you order the wrong orientation and your bedroom layout doesn’t allow for it, you’ll end up with a storage bed that requires a whole ordeal to get open.

Sketch out your room layout before you order. Note which sides of the bed are accessible, how much floor space sits at the foot, and whether a wardrobe or radiator blocks any access point.

3. Skipping the Delivery Access Check

Ottoman beds, especially divan-style ones, often arrive as two large pre-assembled blocks. They’re big, they’re heavy, and they don’t bend round corners. A lot of buyers only discover this when the delivery crew is standing in the hallway.

Measure your front door width, staircase width, any sharp turns on the landing, and ceiling height on the stairs. Pay particular attention to banisters, which frequently catch large furniture deliveries off guard. If access is tight, a bedstead-style ottoman is often the safer choice, as it tends to arrive flat-packed and can be carried through narrow spaces piece by piece.

It’s worth contacting the retailer before you order if you have any doubts. A quick conversation can save you a very expensive return.

4. Assuming All Ottoman Storage Is the Same

First-time buyers often treat storage capacity as a given. In practice, there’s a big difference between a bed with a solid boarded internal floor and one with a fabric dust sheet sitting directly on the ground.

Boarded internal floors offer proper support for heavier items; suitcases, winter duvets, bulky coats, and keep everything clean and protected. Fabric-only bases can sag, collect dust more easily, and don’t hold up as well under weight over time. Standard storage depth sits around 20–24cm, but some models go up to 30cm or more, which genuinely changes what you can fit inside.

Check the product description for internal construction details before committing, especially if storage is the main reason you’re buying one in the first place.

The Verdict

Ottoman beds are excellent, but only when you’ve matched the right one to your room, your mattress, and your access situation. Get the lift orientation wrong or overlook the delivery route and you’ll be dealing with a headache that no amount of extra storage can fix. So, take twenty minutes to measure up and read the spec properly, and you’ll be in much better shape on delivery day.
