When it comes to the home, space is a valuable commodity. That’s why larger properties tend to command larger sums. But even if your home doesn’t offer much space to work with, you might still be able to enjoy the feeling of spaciousness by making a few key tweaks.
Let’s take a look at a few of the strategies that will provide you with room for more enjoyment.
Less is more
The more items you have on display, the more chaotic and disorganised your home will appear to be. Try to strip everything back to the bare essentials with a good clear-out. Think about the items you truly love, then part with the rest. You can take unwanted items to your local charity shop, and support a good cause in the process.
Resist the temptation to fill every available area of wall space. Your home needs so-called ‘negative space’ if it’s to breathe properly. This is a concept used by artists to manipulate your attention. When certain sections of wall are empty, the eye will naturally fall to the other parts of the space.
Smart furniture
The more snugly your furniture fits into the space, the better. In a small home, there’s no sense in throwing away valuable room. You might measure up and look for furniture that matches your dimensions. Or, you might think about furniture that serves many purposes, like stools or ottomans that can double as storage units. Custom pieces like fitted furniture designed especially for small bedrooms can help to make the most of the space you have, whilst still looking characterful and suiting your space.
Trick your eye
Often, you can get better results from a given space without actually moving anything around, or making major physical changes. You might position a few mirrors to allow daylight to spread further, creating the illusion of spaciousness. Swapping out heavy curtains for lightweight window blinds might provide the same effect.
Finally, you might reconsider your choice of light fixtures. By picking a variety of different light sources, you can illuminate the entire space, and eliminate those dark corners.
The right colours
Your choice of decoration can influence the perceived spaciousness of a given room – or of the entire property. Conventional wisdom suggests using airy, bright shades to maximise the impression of space. However, you might equally consider going for bold, deep shades. Green is a great choice if you’re going to be introducing greenery into the interior (which you should do).
Brilliant white might seem like the obvious choice, if your objective is to make the space brighter. However, these shades can often be unduly harsh and stark, which makes softer, tinted shades a little more advisable. Whatever colour you choose, make sure that it matches with the rest of your décor – and with your personal tastes.
