It’s no surprise, therefore that as Hotel Gotham approaches its first full year of operation in Newcastle, it has also been awarded five stars…the only hotel in the city to achieve that official recognition.

Located within the original fire station on Pilgrim Street, Hotel Gotham occupies one of Newcastle’s landmark buildings. It retains its striking 1930s Gothic and ArtDeco architecture and remains very much in keeping with the heritage of the original building. It looks fabulous.
Step inside and both the glamorous 1930s style and attention to detail immediately strike you. That’s before you even reach the reception desk.
Put it this way, if you rate a hotel or restaurant on first impressions, you are going to be stunned.
And they’re not finished yet. Building work is underway to convert the neighbouring police station and courtrooms into a function suite, restaurant and 30 additional bedrooms. They’ll be ready for Christmas and, as with the fire station, the historical theme will continue.
“Keeping faith with the original building has been a key part of our vision for Hotel Gotham,” said General Manager Chris Thompson. “Our Fire bar is set within the original engine room, while Siren occupies what was once the mess room where the firefighters used to eat. Wine is served in fire engine red buckets and menu covers are made from recycled fire hoses. Siren is inspired by the golden age of New York dining, drawing influence from the restaurants and supper clubs that defined Manhattan in the 1920s. Expect handcrafted pasta, premium steaks, fresh seafood, indulgent desserts and expertly mixed cocktails, all served in a setting that captures the glamour and excitement of a bygone era.
“We have as much memorabilia as possible displayed throughout the hotel to reflect its past. We’ve even managed to secure the original hand drawn plans for the building which are on display in reception. You can navigate your way to where horses were stabled and even see where the smithy worked.
“And the historical theme will continue when we open the former police station. I’m already working with the Police Federation to see what sort of artefacts may be available.”
It’s also wonderful to note that, when it comes to dining, as much local produce as possible is used. The hotel proudly states…’ Our farm-to-fork approach highlights the best local produce from North Shields to Northumberland.”
For something a little more intimate, Hotel Gotham has Club Brass, it’s exclusive twofloor members-only club. Guests staying in one of the hotel’s suites also have access to this area.
If you’re familiar with Newcastle, you’ll know how the Pilgrim Street area is being transformed. The arrival of Hotel Gotham couldn’t have been timed better. For those of you unfamiliar with Newcastle, let’s just say Pilgrim Street is well worth a visit.
