Getting Into The Swing Of Things At Hexham Golf Club

Issue 122

And there's one of the game's leading pros who can stop that hook and slice.

There’s something rather special about a golf course which is next to a town. If you live locally, you might be able to walk to the first tee and the all-important 19th hole.

Which is exactly what you’ll find with Hexham Golf Club. It’s one of the oldest and most respected golf clubs in the North East, having been established in 1892.

Some of us at Northern Insight magazine are lucky enough to have been invited for a couple of rounds. We’re a bunch of mixed ability players…one chap plays off 6 while another struggles to get the ball away from the tee. We’ve all been there!

But that’s fine at Hexham Golf Club because it’s a course which challenges decent players yet won’t demoralise those who’re still trying to get the hang of the game. The course lies to the west of Hexham in the stunning Tyne Valley countryside. The parkland setting of gently undulating terrain and tree-lined fairways means you need to be reasonably accurate. It also manages to stay in pristine condition throughout the year. Temporary tees and greens are a rarity.

Over the years, the club has hosted numerous county competitions and regional events, highlighting the quality of the course and its facilities.

It’s a forward-thinking club, something which the members appreciate, although there’s always a nod to the club’s proud history. A new irrigation system has been installed.

Behind the scenes operations and services are constantly monitored and modernised. And yes, you can book tee times online. The Gallery Restaurant within the historic clubhouse has been relaunched with an art partnership that showcases work from local artists, creating a vibrant space where members can dine, relax, and enjoy exhibitions.

The club has moved with the times and has a modern indoor swing studio which includes hitech equipment that records ball and club data and allows you to judge ball launch and club delivery in real time. In other words, it can help you adjust your swing or find out which clubs are likely to work for you. There’s also custom fitting of clubs in the club shop.

Hexham Golf Club is also fortunate in having one of the country’s most respected PGA golfing professionals…Andy Paisley.

Andy plays a central role in supporting members, developing players, and promoting the game of golf in the region. He comes from a golfing family…his brother Chris won the South African Open…and started playing at the age of 7. He originates from Stocksfield and has been with Hexham Golf Club for 18 years, managing the professional shop and offering coaching to golfers of all abilities. He is particularly known for his expertise in putting and performance improvement, using modern coaching technology and data analysis to help golfers refine their skills.

And he not only helps players like you and I; he also works closely with many of the world’s leadings pros like Lee Westwood. He’s a regular coach on the LIV and European Tour as well as working with many of the game’s current and up and coming ladies’ players. He’ll be heading off to the US Masters very shortly…but that’s after visits to South Africa, Hong Kong and Dubai. When you’re good, you’re in demand.

Having Andy as the professional and ensuring that the club continues to evolve while also respecting tradition, shows that Hexham Golf Club is in safe hands. Continued investment in both its facilities and digital services, proves that the club strives to provide an outstanding environment for golfers while strengthening its position as one of the premier golf venues in the North East of England.

Why not call in for a tour of the facilities. Experienced players and absolute novices are more than welcome. Peter Smith is the General Manager…he’d be delighted to show you what’s on offer.
