A Toast To December

Issue 119

By Jeff Hodgson, General Manager, Lumley Castle.

December. The word alone seems to sparkle, doesn’t it? At Lumley Castle, it’s the month where magic truly fills the air.

Twinkling lights in every corner, the scent of mulled wine and mince pies drifting through the halls, and the sound of laughter echoing from festive parties and celebrations. It’s the busiest time of the year, and I couldn’t be prouder of the incredible team who make it all happen.

Our team works tirelessly throughout the year, but December really is another level. From early mornings setting up breakfast for Christmas party guests, to late nights ensuring every event sparkles with Lumley charm – they do it all with smiles, good humour, and that unmistakable spirit of teamwork that makes this place so special.

And while we give so much of ourselves to make sure others enjoy the season, we also recognise how important it is to pause, rest, and reconnect with our own loved ones. That’s why, once the final glass has been raised and the last carol sung, Lumley Castle closes its doors from the 24th to the 26th December. Those few precious days are for our team to spend with their families – because, truthfully, without the love, patience, and support of those families behind us, none of what we do here would be possible.

So, as we prepare to welcome another dazzling December at Lumley, I’d like to raise a glass – to our guests, our team, and the families who stand beside us. Thank you for making the magic happen, year after year.

And because no Christmas message feels complete without a little poetry, here’s one to leave you feeling festive:

A Toast to December by Lumley’s Fireside

The halls are bright, the candles gleam,

The year’s end whispers like a dream.

With laughter warm and hearts alight,

We toast to joy this winter night.

To those who serve with tireless grace,

Whose smiles light up this special place,

May rest and love your Christmas bring,

For you’re the heart of everything.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year from all of us here at Lumley Castle.
