Following glowing reviews from my parents, my partner Josh and I recently visited the Maldron Hotel for an overnight dinner, bed and breakfast stay.
Perfectly positioned in the heart of Newcastle, the hotel seamlessly blends city-centre convenience with modern comfort and luxury, making it the ideal choice for both business and leisure travellers alike.
Stepping through the doors of the Maldron, guests are welcomed by an atmosphere that is both contemporary and comfortable. The reception and lounge areas feel spacious and stylish, with plush seating, ambient lighting and touches of the Maldron’s signature yellow creating a sleek, inviting space. Upon arrival, the attentive staff provided a relaxed check-in experience, setting the tone for a stay defined by ease and comfort.
Boasting a range of options, including deluxe double, twin, family and executive rooms, our room exuded both tranquillity and sophistication. The space was wellequipped with a flat-screen TV, tea & coffee facilities and a large en-suite bathroom, featuring an extravagant waterfall shower. Complete with a luxurious king bed, fluffy bathrobes and complimentary slippers, the room promised a relaxing and restful stay.
Dinner at the hotel’s Grain & Grill restaurant was a real highlight. The menu champions quality local produce and flavourful cooking, specialising in succulent grilled meats, vibrant salads and crowd-pleasing classics with a refined touch.
Feeling thirsty, we began with a crisp glass of Pinot Grigio before delving into our starters. I devoured the hand-stretched sourdough garlic bread, topped with stringy mozzarella and rich with freshly baked flavour, whilst Josh enjoyed the crispy king prawns, served with zesty lime and a zingy sweet chilli sauce.
For mains, Josh tucked into the gourmet beef burger, layered with crisp prosciutto, grilled onions, beef tomato and rocket, all nestled in a soft brioche bun and paired with chunky, golden chips. I chose the baked Cajun and lime-crusted salmon, accompanied by charred tender stem broccoli, fried potatoes and a tangy tomato salsa. Both dishes were served in generous, hearty portions, and demonstrated the kitchen’s commitment to fresh ingredients and bold, balanced flavours.
To finish, we shared the indulgent warm sticky toffee pudding, drenched in rich toffee sauce and paired with smooth vanilla ice cream – a fitting finale to a truly delicious meal at Grain & Grill. Throughout our evening, we were also struck by the lively yet relaxed atmosphere, as well as the exceptional service and hospitality.
Following a serene night’s sleep, breakfast provided another opportunity to appreciate the Maldron’s dedication to high-quality food. The Vitality Breakfast buffet is impressively extensive, catering to all tastebuds with hearty cooked options, freshly baked pastries, fruit and continental favourites. Spoilt for choice, we sampled a little of everything and left feeling nourished, satisfied and ready for the day ahead.
All in all, the Maldron ticks every box for an overnight city escape. Its central location places guests at the heart of Newcastle’s cultural, culinary and retail scene, while the hotel itself offers a welcome haven of comfort and tranquillity. With attentive service, stylish surroundings and exquisite dining, our visit left us thoroughly impressed – and already planning our return.
