5 Best Places To Live In North Yorkshire

Issue 97

North Yorkshire is a part of the country that might evoke a whole range of associations. You might think of the windswept moorland that inspired some of the great literary works of the 19th century. Or you might think of historic towns, with medieval walls and Viking ruins.

Modern life in the region offers its share of practical advantages, too, with major cities like Leeds being just a short drive away. There are certain corners of the county, however, which provide a winning balance between picturesque charm and contemporary comforts. Let’s consider them.

The Best Places to Live

So, which parts of Yorkshire are best to live in?

York

There are few better places to start than the county town. Residents of York are able to enjoy the sights of the famous York Minster Cathedral, the ancient city walls, and a whole slew of gorgeous period buildings. At just over a hundred square miles, it’s easy to get around, too – and the transport links to the rest of the region and beyond are excellent. There are plenty of new-build homes for sale in York, too, which means that it’s relatively easy to find a new home, here.

Ripon

Ripon is playfully referred to as a ‘little city’. It has plenty of appeal, and has frequently been singled out for praise by surveys of the general public. Again, there’s a marvellous cathedral to consider, as well as the surrounding patchwork of rolling farmland.

Boroughbridge

This little market town comes with everything you’d expect, right down to the cobbled square at the centre. The town is exactly equidistant between London and Edinburgh, and, like those famous cities, it comes with a vibrant culture of independent retailers.

Hovingham

The smallest entry on our list is home to just a few hundred people, and there are few properties available. However, if you’d like the ultimate in secluded Yorkshire living, it’s a village that’s difficult to rival. There are plenty of honey-coloured buildings around the centre, with the most impressive of these being the working country estate of Hovingham Hall, where locals can go to pick up their firewood during the winter.

Harrogate

This little Victorian Spa town is to be found right in the middle of Yorkshire. It’s famous for putting on a variety of events throughout the year, with a vibrant theatre and plenty of venues putting on live music. There’s also plenty of local produce, and a series of independent restaurants to enjoy.

Finally, we should consider the Nidderdale National Landscape, which is a local Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s actually accessible from many of the places we’ve mentioned. Wherever you are in the region, you can visit to enjoy some of the most sweeping, spectacular scenery in North Yorkshire.
