By David Gartland, Principal and CEO at Darlington College
Lifelong learning has never been more important. In a world shaped by rapid technological change, evolving industries and new ways of working, the skills we learn at the start of our careers are no longer enough to last throughout our employment. At Darlington College, we see every day how continued learning can transform individual lives, strengthen businesses and support the long-term prosperity of our town and wider region.
For adults, returning to learning can feel like a daunting step. Many are balancing work, family responsibilities and financial pressures. That is why access, flexibility and affordability are at the heart of our mission. The government’s Adult Skills Fund is essential to enable those looking to upskill or retrain to be able to do so in a way that fits around busy lifestyles. It allows eligible adults to gain vital qualifications, often for free in areas such as digital skills, construction, health and social care, leadership and management. These programmes are not about education for education’s sake they are about real skills for real jobs, supporting career progression and workforce resilience.
Businesses have a vital role to play in championing lifelong learning. The most successful organisations are those that actively invest in their people and encourage staff to upskill, reskill and adapt as their roles evolve. This might mean offering time for training, working with the college to co-develop programmes, or simply by creating a culture where learning is valued and supported. The return on that investment is clear. It improves productivity, staff are retained and a workforce remains motivated, confident and future-ready.
We are proud to be expanding our campus footprint into the heart of the town with the new Adult Skills Centre in the former Northern Echo building. This facility is designed specifically with adult learners and employers in mind and will bring training closer to where people live and work. It signals a step change in how and where learning happens in Darlington, making it more visible, accessible and aligned to local economic needs.
Lifelong learning does not stop at Level 3 or with shorter sector specific courses either. Increasingly, adults are seeking higher-level skills and qualifications to progress into leadership roles or specialist careers without leaving the area to do so. That is why we are excited about the growing opportunities for Higher Education on your doorstep in the bespoke Teesside University Atmos building, positioned at the heart of the campus. It symbolises the strength of our partnership with Teesside University within Darlington’s developing Education Quarter. These programmes allow learners to study for higher-level qualifications locally, combining academic learning with practical, employer-relevant experience.
The Education Quarter represents a powerful statement of intent for Darlington that education, skills and aspiration sit at the centre of our regeneration and growth. By working together alongside Teesside University, employers, local partners, councils and learners we can create clear, accessible pathways from entry-level skills through to Higher Education and beyond.
Lifelong learning is not a luxury, it is a necessity. With the right support from business, targeted funding and high-quality local provision, we can unlock potential at every stage of life and ensure the region’s workforce is ready for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
