Jamie Clark - Health & safety consultant at Carney Consultancy
Did you grow up in the North East or did you decide to relocate here in later life?
I have lived in the North East all of my life, grew up in South Shields and moved to Newcastle when I was 19.
What is your role at Carney Consultancy?
I am a health and safety consultant, which predominantly consists of conducting site inspections.
I am also part of a team which provides environmental consultancy to our clients. We have seen a surge in demand for advice on environmental and carbon reduction, resulting in a number of collaborative partnerships. Last year, alongside two members of the Carney team, I was provided with specialist training in areas such as sustainability and environmental awareness.
SMEs need to meet the increasingly strict environmental stipulations being put in place by clients in the public and private sectors. Now, with our advanced knowledge and training, we are in a very strong position to assist companies in the supply chain on their net zero journey.
I also provide training in areas such as Manual Handling, Safe Working at Height, Abrasive Wheels, Asbestos Awareness and Health & Safety Awareness, where I prepare and review risk assessments and method statements.
Why do you enjoy working at the company?
I thoroughly enjoy working at Carney Consultancy because no day is the same. I visit an array of sites and meet different people every day.
What do you think it means to be a business person in the North East?
The North East business environment is very community orientated. Everyone knows each other, so there is always support on offer.
Where do you like to eat out in the region?
Eating out is something which I really enjoy. I like to try any new restaurants which arrive in the city. Most recently, I visited Gaucho which may be home to one of the best steaks I have had. Tapas is one of my favourite cuisines and Kaltur on Dean Street is up there with the best. Newcastle’s restaurant scene is buzzing at the moment and there are still so many places that I need to try.
Are the people really friendlier?
Newcastle and the North East in general is a great place to live, there’s friendly people wherever you go, and yes, without being too biased, this region tops the lot.
What do you think is the best view in the North East?
My favourite view is the view from the Free Trade Inn beer garden overlooking the Tyne.
