Team Spotlight - Corporate And Commercial

Issue 48

For the second part of our Gordon Brown Law Firm Team Spotlight series, we caught up with the Corporate and Commercial team to hear more about how they can assist you in all aspects of corporate and commercial law, from buying and selling property and businesses to commercial property investing and leasing.

Can you tell our readers a little more about the services the commercial team provide?

We support businesses and commercial property owners across the region and nationally across a wide variety of services.

Alongside working with businesses on aspects such as getting legal structure right, review of commercial contracts and dealing with new investment and refinancing to name just a few of our services, we also work with landlords and property investors from dealings with their commercial properties and tenants to borrowing money for acquisition or re-finance.

We can also assist tenants in taking new leases and dealing with their landlords during a lease contract. Everything listed above really does just scratch the surface and we can work with individuals to establish exactly what aspects of corporate and commercial law they need assistance with.

Who makes up the commercial team?

Partner and commercial property specialist John Morgan is head of our team and we have five other team members with many years combined experience. Legal support is also provided by Partner and business law expert Anna McGill, consultant and firm founder Gordon Brown, who has 40 years’ experience in all aspects of commercial law, solicitor and commercial property and business specialist Jennifer Boynton, paralegal and property investment specialist Charlotte Munroe and paralegal Stephen McCaffery. What will clients typically come to the commercial team for?

Generally, the services we have listed – but we have the skill and experience at the firm to deal with most legal issues that are likely to arise during the life of a company or business, whether in connection with premises, relationships between owners, raising funds for expansion or preparing for retirement.

Tell us something that we didn’t know about the commercial team?

We’re (almost) all North East born and bred (John is from Coventry but moved to Darlington when he was 10 so thinks he has lived that down and Charlotte is an unashamed southerner). We’re proud of the region we live in – and the clients we serve here.

What motivates the commercial team?

Clients who come back to us time and again, the broad range of work we undertake and a friendly and supportive work environment. We all like what we do and particularly enjoy seeing our clients grow and develop with our support.

What does a successful week look like for the commercial team?

Our work is largely transactional so it’s a good week when we’re able to complete client sales, purchases or leases. We really enjoy seeing clients moving into new premises, or taking control of a business, secure in the knowledge that we’ve protected them in the small print of the paperwork.

What does the future hold for commercial law?

Commercial law is constantly changing – every government budget brings new issues to consider and react to. We work hard to be up to date and to make use of technology so that our clients can rely on us for the best, efficiently delivered advice to protect them and their businesses.

Lastly, who makes the best cup of tea/coffee?

It depends how quickly you want it! John will make you a good cup of coffee, but it will involve weighing out coffee beans, hand grinding and at least a fifteen-minute wait…
