Accountant Of The Month

Issue 118

Steven Tuckwell - Owner, 1st Cloud Accountants.

What inspired you to become an Accountant, and what path did you take to get here?

From being a paperboy, to working fruit markets on cold mornings to selling Christmas Trees whilst still at school, the work ethic has always been in me. This led me to be fascinated by how businesses work with the stories behind them and how to make money. At 16 I left school and started on a YTS scheme in an accountants and was ACCA qualified by the time I was 22 years old. I started my own practice when aged 28 and over the years I’ve built 1st Cloud Accountants into a firm that’s all about combining expert advice with a down-to-earth, approachable style. We opened a second office around 10 years ago in South Shields and in September 2025, we’ve expanded by purchasing JC Accountants, which has helped strengthen our presence and services even further in the North East area.

What are the most common financial mistakes individuals and businesses make?

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people waiting too long to ask for advice. Many try to handle everything themselves until problems start to snowball. Another is not planning ahead for tax or cash flow — both are crucial for stability and growth. Getting the right systems and advice in place early makes a huge difference.

How has technology changed the accounting profession, and what tools do you rely on most?

Technology has transformed everything. I was an early adopter of technology and build and maintain our own on premises servers. Technology has made accounting faster, more accurate, and much more collaborative. Our servers combined with cloud software lets clients and accountants see the same information in real time, which helps us make better decisions together. At 1st Cloud, we are fully embracing AI tools as they allow us to deliver proactive advice rather than just historical reports.

What advice would you give to small business owners looking to improve their financial health?

Don’t be afraid to seek guidance early, and make sure you really understand your numbers. Set aside time each month to review your figures, not just at year end. And build a relationship with an accountant who’s genuinely interested in your journey. Our philosophy is to provide full services for clients from Birth to Exit, meaning we’re there at every stage of their journey, from the first registration of a business or tax return to sale planning, or IHT planning.

How do you help clients navigate tax planning and ensure compliance with regulations?

We take a proactive approach. Rather than just filing returns, we help clients structure their businesses efficiently and stay one step ahead of deadlines. Every business is unique, so we tailor our advice to fit their circumstances. We also make compliance as stress-free as possible by using digital systems to keep everything organised and transparent.

What are the biggest financial trends or challenges businesses should prepare for in the coming years?

I think automation, digital reporting, and AI-driven insights will continue to reshape how we work. At the same time, economic uncertainty means cash flow and adaptability are more important than ever. Businesses that plan well and invest in solid financial systems will be the ones that thrive. At 1st Cloud, we’re focused on helping client’s future-proof their operations for exactly that reason. Uncertainty in the economy doesn’t drive growth but being adaptable and knowing your figures does.

What qualities make a great Accountant, and how do you build strong client relationships?

A great accountant listens first. Understanding what matters most to each client and their goals, pressures, and motivations is key. I also believe in being approachable and friendly and don’t hide behind jargon or formality. Many of our clients see us as part of their team, which is exactly how we like it.

How do you handle the pressure of working with tight deadlines and complex financial issues?

Organisation and teamwork. We’ve built a strong team culture at 1st Cloud, where everyone supports each other to deliver great results for the clients. When things get hectic (which they often are with the never ending list of deadlines) it’s about staying calm, prioritising, and remembering that every challenge is solvable with the right plan and right team.

What’s one piece of financial advice you think everyone should follow?

Keep your records in good order and don’t underestimate the power of regular financial reviews. Knowing your numbers gives you control, confidence, and clarity and that leads to better decisions in business and in life.

What do you enjoy most about being an Accountant, and what keeps you motivated in your profession?

It’s incredibly rewarding to see clients succeed whether that’s a new start-up getting off the ground or a long-established business planning its next chapter. I’m proud of how 1st Cloud has grown, our strong brand reputation, and our continued community involvement including the full naming rights of South Shields FC football ground and supporting many charity events. Looking ahead, I’m excited about future collaborations with stakeholder, expanding our brand reach and continuing to grow the business while keeping our personal, client-focused approach at the heart of everything we do.
