More Than Academic Success: Discover Rgs Newcastle

Issue 129

At Royal Grammar School Newcastle, academic excellence sits alongside a rich educational experience, giving pupils the freedom to explore their interests, challenge themselves and discover where their talents lie.

We foster an environment where students, in Year 3 to Year 13, learn alongside and from one another, developing the confidence, collaboration skills and respect that will serve them throughout their lives.

Guided by our philosophy of “There’s More to Life”, we believe that families are investing in far more than a set of exam results. Through exceptional teaching, extensive co-curricular opportunities, outstanding pastoral care and a vibrant school community, students gain the confidence, experiences and life skills that can shape their futures. Families can experience this first-hand at RGS Newcastle’s Open Morning on Saturday 14th November.

This approach was recently recognised when RGS Newcastle was named the Best Value Independent School in the Borders and Tyne region by The Telegraph.

As Headmaster Geoffrey Stanford explains: “At the RGS we believe that exam results should the consequence, not the purpose of a good education. We seek to provide an education that gives young people opportunities and experiences that can shape the rest of their lives.”

From Junior School onwards, students are encouraged to be ambitious and embrace new opportunities. Guided by the RGS Superpowers of Able, Strong, Calm and Kind, younger pupils build strong academic foundations alongside resilience, self-belief and a love of learning.

As students’ progress through the school, opportunities broaden further. Alongside a challenging academic curriculum, RGS offers more than 170 co-curricular activities spanning music, drama, debating, volunteering, academic societies and sport.

Whether performing on stage, taking part in a musical ensemble, competing for a sports team, joining the Combined Cadet Force or engaging in the wide range of clubs and activities, pupils are encouraged to discover their strengths and pursue their passions.

As a co-educational school, RGS brings together students with different perspectives and experiences, helping them learn how to work alongside others and respect the contributions that others make in a way that will serve them well beyond their school years.

Students joining Sixth Form from schools across the North East become part of one of the largest and most dynamic independent school Sixth Forms in the country. Alongside more than 30 A-Level options, students benefit from programmes such as PLUS, Complementary Studies and Futures, helping them prepare for university, degree apprenticeships, careers and life beyond school.

The impact of this approach can be seen in the achievements of our students. This year, students progressed to a wide range of destinations including Russell Group universities, specialist institutions and degree apprenticeships pursuing pathways as diverse as medicine, engineering, business, the creative industries and public service.

As Headmaster Mr Stanford, Sixth Form Head Miss Enevoldson and Junior School Head Mr Miller all agree: “Our aim is to help every young person develop the confidence and character to make the most of the opportunities ahead of them.”

Located in the heart of Newcastle with excellent public transport links, RGS attracts students from across the North East. Families are warmly invited to discover the RGS difference at the school’s Open Morning on Saturday 14th November 2026. It is an opportunity to meet staff and students, explore the school and see first-hand how RGS helps young people thrive from their earliest school years through to university and beyond.
