Nissan’s announcement today on the allocation of a new model to the Sunderland plant is a huge boost to the North East and further strengthens its position as one of the UK's leading automotive regions.
Nissan has announced plans to launch a new model – Nissan Kicks – a compact (B-segment) crossover – in Europe and will invest £170m to build it at its plant in the UK, which, this year, celebrates its 40th anniversary. This investment highlights the world-class manufacturing, electrification capability, innovation and skills excellence that has been nurtured for decades across the North East of England.
The region is already home to one of Europe’s most productive automotive ecosystems, with globally recognised vehicle manufacturing, battery production and an extensive supply chain supporting thousands of highly skilled jobs. The region has attracted more than £3.3 billion of vehicle electrification investment since 2021 and is widely recognised as a national leader in electric vehicle and advanced manufacturing technologies.
Paul Butler, Chief Executive of the North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA), said: “The North East has established itself as one of the premier automotive manufacturing locations in Europe. Our combination of manufacturing expertise, electrification capability, strong supply chains, collaborative networks and skilled workforce, makes the region an attractive destination for international investment.
“Nissan’s announcement to allocate a new model to the Sunderland plant affirms this and is a major boost for Nissan, its employees, the supply chain and ultimately the region.
“It’s a superb way to celebrate 40 years of Nissan in Sunderland. Few, if any, foreign direct investments in the UK can match the scale, impact and long-term commitment that Nissan has demonstrated over four decades.”
The North East automotive sector employs more than 27,000 people and includes major vehicle manufacturers, leading off-highway equipment producers, battery manufacturing capability, specialist SMEs and a comprehensive research and development network.
Paul continues: “Collaboration is key and we will continue to work closely with industry and public sector partners to continue to ensure the region remains investment-ready through continued focus on skills, innovation, infrastructure and supply chain development.”
