Golden Hammer Awards Reveal Challenge To Crown North East’s Top Joiner

Issue 122

Organisers of the inaugural Golden Hammer Awards have revealed the task facing the North East’s top joiners as they compete for industry recognition and a £5,000 first prize.

Taking place at Hartlepool College on 30 May 2026, the competition—organised by Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF) in partnership with True North Construction and Hartlepool College—will see competitors put their skills to the test by constructing a traditional hand-cut roof.

The Golden Hammer Awards are supported by headline sponsor Jewson, in association with British Lead.

The task requires a high level of precision, technical ability and craftsmanship. Judges will assess each entry on the accuracy of joints with minimal gaps, as well as ensuring all dimensions and pitch align precisely with the provided drawings.

Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF) is a long-established trade association bringing together construction companies and contractors operating in the North East of England. As a membership organisation, it is proactive in raising the profile of its regional members, supporting training and apprenticeships and helping to future-proof the North East construction industry.

Angela Carney, president of the Northern Counties Builders Federation, said: “The Golden Hammer Awards have been established to showcase the exceptional skills and craftsmanship we have across the region. The task of constructing a traditional hand-cut roof will really put competitors through their paces and highlight the level of precision and expertise required in modern joinery.

“Families are welcome to attend and support competitors on the day.

“With such a strong judging panel in place, we can ensure each entry is assessed with expert insight and fairness, while celebrating the vital contribution that skilled tradespeople make to our industry.”

A panel of experienced construction professionals will oversee the judging process, including Steven Henderson, construction director at True North Construction and carpentry and joinery specialists Graeme Fallowfield and Graeme Southward from Hartlepool College.

One standout entrant will be crowned the overall winner, taking home a £5,000 prize. The runner-up will receive a Makita DLX6100PX1 18v 6 Piece LXT Drill Grinder Kit and a cash prize of £500, third place will receive £250 plus tools.

At a time when the industry continues to face a well-documented shortage of skilled workers, the Golden Hammer Awards aim to inspire the next generation while recognising those already excelling in the sector.

Steven Henderson, construction director at True North Construction, said: “The awards are about recognising the skilled tradespeople who are at the heart of construction. Joiners bring specialist knowledge and craftsmanship to projects, ensuring work is delivered to the highest standards.

“Being part of the judging panel is a great opportunity to see that talent first-hand and to celebrate the dedication and professionalism that joiners bring to the industry every day.”
