Robin Sheppard - An Inspirational Leader In Hospitality

Issue 122

By Jeff Hodgson, General Manager, Lumley Castle Hotel

In the world of hospitality, true leadership is not measured simply by titles or achievements, but by resilience, integrity, and the ability to inspire others. Few embody those qualities more profoundly than Robin Sheppard.

Having recently read his deeply moving book, A Solitary Confinement, I felt compelled to dedicate this month’s article to a man whose journey – both personal and professional – continues to inspire so many of us.

The book is an extraordinary account of Robin’s battle with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a condition that left him temporarily paralysed and fighting for his independence. His story of determination, mental strength and refusal to give in is nothing short of remarkable. It is honest, humbling and ultimately uplifting – and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone.

I have been incredibly fortunate to work directly with Robin during his time as former President of Bespoke Hotels. Leadership in hospitality can be demanding, complex and at times relentless – yet Robin always led with clarity, vision and compassion. He had (and continues to have) that rare ability to offer constructive feedback in a way that motivates rather than discourages. He encourages you to think bigger, do better and believe in yourself.

As General Manager of Lumley Castle Hotel, it has been a privilege to work closely with him. Robin consistently championed individuality within our properties, empowering general managers to lead with personality while upholding exceptional standards. He understood that hospitality is not just about buildings – it’s about people.

Now working in consultancy, Robin remains someone you want in your corner if you’re seeking guidance, direction or simply wise counsel. His experience across the industry is vast, but it’s his humanity that sets him apart.

He continues to be heavily involved with Gotham Hotels including the much-anticipated new opening in Bristol later this summer. His influence was also instrumental in the recent launch of Hotel Gotham Newcastle, a property that reflects his passion for distinctive, experience-led hospitality.

What makes Robin such an inspirational role model is not just his professional success – though that alone would be impressive – but the way he overcame profound personal adversity and returned to the industry with even greater perspective. Guillain-Barré syndrome may have tested him physically, but it strengthened him mentally. A Solitary Confinement shows us that resilience is built in the quietest, most challenging moments.

In hospitality, we often speak about service, standards and strategy. Robin reminds us that leadership is about courage, empathy and belief – especially when facing life’s toughest trials.

I am proud to dedicate this article to one of the most inspirational men I have had the privilege to work alongside. Thank you, Robin, for your guidance, your encouragement and for continuing to lead by example.

Your story truly is worth reading – and even more, worth learning from.
