Esh Construction Strengthens Communities Through Housing And Public Realm Delivery

Issue 122

With a growing pipeline of residential and regeneration schemes now moving forward, Esh Construction is delivering tangible progress across the region.

The regional contractor is advancing major housing developments, affordable homes and high-profile public realm projects that are designed to support long-term community growth, improve local environments and create places people can be proud of.

Extra care planning permission secured

Plans to deliver an extra care scheme and two apartment blocks for over 55s at Seaham Garden Village have been given the go ahead by Durham County Council’s planning committee.

The development, led by northern housing association Karbon Homes, will deliver 118 extra care apartments, designed to help people with differing levels of care and support needs to live well and independently, and 93 apartments for over 55s.

Esh Construction is the lead contractor for the 750-home Seaham Garden Village development, and the recent planning approval will mark the fourth phase of the project.

Grant Watson, Construction Director at Esh Construction, said: “We’re proud to be continuing our strong relationship with Karbon on the next phase of Seaham Garden Village, bringing forward an extra care development that will make a real difference to people’s lives.

“The scheme responds directly to a growing need for high-quality, supported housing in the area, helping residents to live independently while remaining part of a thriving community – we’re looking forward to working closely with Karbon to help realise the long-term vision for the garden village.”

Homes handed over in Middlesbrough

Esh Construction’s affordable housing team has also reached a major milestone in Middlesbrough where more than half of the 296 new homes at its Hillside Gardens development have been handed over to social housing provider Thirteen Group.

149 of the properties have now been handed over at the £56 million development, with the remaining 147 homes expected to be completed this summer.

Mark Binns, Operations Director at Esh Construction, said: “Reaching this major milestone at Hillside Gardens is a significant moment for everyone involved and reflects the strong partnership between Esh Construction, Thirteen Group and Middlesbrough Council. Handing over 149 highquality, affordable homes on a site that lay vacant for more than a decade underlines our shared commitment to creating sustainable communities that will benefit the area for generations to come.

“Hillside Gardens marks the final phase of three key projects delivered for Thirteen Group in Middlesbrough which has brought more than 540 new affordable homes to the town.”

Restoring connections across the Tees

Work is progressing at Stockton Waterfront Urban Park, a transformational regeneration scheme that will reconnect Stockton town centre with the River Tees and create a vibrant new public space for residents and visitors.

Delivered by Esh Construction on behalf of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, the £23 million urban park is a central part of the council’s long-term vision to revitalise the town centre.

A recent milestone has involved the extension of the Millennium Footbridge, which spans the River Tees. Once complete, it will reinstate an important pedestrian connection between the High Street and the riverside, improving accessibility to the new urban park. The works have involved the installation of a 16.8metre main span, weighing approximately 19 tonnes, lifted into position using a 110tonne crane, with additional wing sections installed using a 60tonne crane.

Construction continues across the park, including landscaping, public realm works and the formation of an amphitheatre and terraced seating overlooking the river.

Stockton Waterfront Urban Park is expected to open in late spring 2026.
