As we look back on the past year, it's clear that 2025 has been a period of resilience, progress, and ambition for Darlington College.
We have worked tirelessly to ensure that every student feels supported and inspired, and I’m proud to say that the results speak for themselves. From record student engagement and enrolments to exciting new partnerships and projects this year has truly showcased what makes our college a cornerstone of education in the region.
A year of achievement
One of the most significant achievements has been the continues growth in student enrolment numbers, across school leavers, apprentices and those choosing the college to study as an adult learner, or in higher education. As a result of this we have seen a requirement to invest in personal support systems. We’ve strengthened our pastoral care and introduced new wellbeing initiatives, ensuring that students thrive not only in their studies but in their personal development. Our commitment to holistic education remains unwavering, and it’s been rewarding to see students embrace opportunities that build confidence and resilience alongside vocational excellence.
Learning beyond the classroom
We’ve also noticed a shift in what students are seeking from their education. Increasingly, learners want practical skills and clear pathways into employment. This trend has driven us to expand our vocational offerings and embed further skills influenced by our regular employer boards into every course. Students are looking for flexibility, industry relevance, and real-world experience. We have taken this responsibility seriously and with the help of the Turing Scheme have seen students travel across the globe, to Tanzania, India, Cambodia, Brazil and Thailand as well as take up work experience opportunities across Europe.
Collaboration with Business and Community
Our role in supporting local industry has never been more vital. This year, we’ve forged new collaborations with employers across sectors, from advanced manufacturing to digital technology. These partnerships not only inform our curriculum but provide students with invaluable work placements and apprenticeships. A standout example is our joint initiative with a leading engineering firm, which has enabled students to work on live projects, bridging the gap between classroom learning and workplace application and reciprocating this support with the training of recent graduates in their business in Health and Safety Principles.
Community engagement continues to be a defining feature of Darlington College. We’ve strengthened ties with local schools and partnered with community organisations to widen participation and raise aspirations. As we speak, we have students in the town centre undertaking an entrepreneurial project alongside the Darlington Economic Campus and the community can benefit from family portrait photography and craft sessions with their children as a result. These efforts reaffirm our belief that education is a shared journey, and we’re proud to play an active role in the life of our region.
Innovation and Sustainability at the heart of what we do
Innovation has been at the heart of our strategy. We’ve invested in cutting-edge technology to support curriculum teaching, launched new courses in emerging fields, and continue to create dynamic learning environments. From virtual reality labs to state-of-the-art workshops, these enhancements ensure our students are prepared for the future of work.
Sustainability and social responsibility remain central to our mission too. We’ve implemented green practices across campus, from energy-efficient systems to waste reduction programs, and embedded sustainability into our curriculum. Our students are not only learning about environmental responsibility, they’re living it every day.
Of course, the year has been filled with so many inspiring success stories. From staff winning national awards to students securing employment or apprenticeships in careers of their dreams, heading to their first university choice or overcoming adversity, these achievements reflect the passion and dedication that define our college.

Looking ahead, our priorities are clear; to continue innovating, deepen employer partnerships, and expand opportunities for every learner. We aim to grow our influence as a hub for skills development, ensuring that Darlington College remains a driving force for education, employment, and community prosperity.
