Richard Mearman; Commercial Director, Vest Construction

Can you tell us about Vest Construction and your role?

As a board member, I am actively involved in the general operations of the business, with a particular focus on its commercial aspects. My responsibilities include sourcing tender opportunities, pricing works and delegating tasks to estimators as necessary. Additionally, I oversee the volume and value of works on-site, to ensure optimal operational performance and business efficiency.

When was the company established?

Vest Construction was established in 2004

What projects is the company currently undertaking?

We currently have major restoration projects in and around Durham Cathedral. We also have works in Teesside, Sunderland and Newcastle within the education and healthcare sectors, predominantly.

Which areas of the UK does Vest Construction operate within?

We operate from Berwick in the north to Thirsk in the south and as far west as Haltwhistle.

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the construction sector?

We have numerous issues, the most prominent are skilled labour shortages and client uncertainties.

What can be done to bridge the skills gap in the construction sector?

Bridging the skills gap in the construction sector requires a multi-faceted approach involving industry stakeholders, government initiatives and education providers. More than anything, we need to make the construction sector appealing to our young, again.

You are a member of Northern Counties Builders Federation. How does being aligned to a sector body support Vest Construction?

Aligning with NCBF provides Vest Construction with tangible benefits and also reinforces its commitment to quality, collaboration and the advancement of the construction industry in the North East.

What’s your proudest business achievement?

My personal, proudest achievement was becoming a director and shareholder in the company. Our proudest business achievement was most likely the award and construction of the Welcome building in our home town, Bishop Auckland.
