Gary Brannighan, business development manager at Hodgson Sayers

Can you tell us a bit about Hodgson Sayers and your role?

Hodgson Sayers is a specialist company providing roofing, building maintenance and security products. We operate across the UK and are headquartered in Stanley, County Durham, with an additional base in Nottingham.

In my role, I manage our security products and services, guiding our customers through their needs from start to finish. Additionally, I act as business development manager, representing the company and showcasing the full range of products and services we offer. I also focus on creating opportunities to collaborate and learn from other like-minded companies within our sector.

What projects is Hodgson Sayers currently involved in?

We are working on a mix of long-term framework projects and exciting one-offs. Our clients range from Tier 1 construction companies to SMEs and architects. We’ve had the pleasure of working on some fantastic projects across the North East, such as the Stack at St. James’ Park and even supplying doors to Starbucks in Cramlington. Every project brings something new and keeps us on our toes!

Which areas of the UK does Hodgson Sayers operate in?

While we primarily operate in the UK, our two bases in the North East and Nottingham allow us to serve a diverse client base, including Scottish Water. Flexibility is key to how we approach and deliver our services. We’re also exploring international opportunities but for now, we’re focused on solidifying our UK presence.

What do you see as the biggest challenges and opportunities in the construction sector?

The biggest challenge, in my view, is the skills and talent gap.

The construction and manufacturing sectors – outside of large players like Nissan – often get overlooked by younger generations. There’s a huge opportunity to embrace the advancements the industry has made. When I first started in construction, things were very different. There’s a real need to show the next generation just how far we’ve come and how exciting and advanced the industry is now.

How can the skills gap be addressed in the construction sector?

Education and investment in technology are key. I don’t think the younger generation fully realises how much the sector has evolved and that’s a big part of our challenge. The old stereotype of construction being cold, dirty and low-skilled just isn’t true anymore. We must champion and push for a more modern and dynamic image to attract talent.

How does being aligned with a sector body like Northern Counties Builders Federation support Hodgson Sayers?

We’re incredibly proud to be members of Northern Counties Builders Federation. It shares our values and vision for the industry. Being part of this community allows us to collaborate, share best practices and encourage investment in training and apprenticeships – all of which are essential to shaping the future of the construction sector.

What’s your proudest business achievement?

Starting my career as a labourer, moving into HGV driving and later returning to education as a mature student has been a significant journey. I worked my way up from project management to director roles and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to change direction, learn and develop into whatever career path you choose.

Is there a mantra you live by in business?

It’s simple – treat others the way you want to be treated. Respect and understanding form the foundation of all good business relationships.
