I was thrilled to attend the opening night of the musical phenomenon Wicked, as it flies into the Sunderland Empire for an extravagant four-week season.
As the 10th longest-running West End show in British history, Wicked serves as a prequel to the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The musical delves into the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, exploring themes of love, identity and magic, as well as how the iconic characters of Oz come to be.
Featuring memorable hits such as ‘Defying Gravity’, ‘Popular’, and ‘For Good’, the musical’s powerful score truly brought the story to life.
Showcasing a talented cast, a sensational performance was noted from Laura Pick, whose outstanding vocals in the role of Elphaba stole the show. Coupled with slick choreography, excellent storytelling and a captivating set, the spectacular production led the entire audience to a well-deserved standing ovation.
Wicked will run at the Sunderland Empire until Sunday 20th October, so be sure to grab your tickets now and get ready to experience this musical sensation.
