Creating Your Dream Garden

Issue 104

Designing your dream garden? Whether you have a large country plot or a small urban courtyard, the principles you should follow are the same. Here’s how to transform a simple outdoor space into your dream garden.

Start with a vision

Before you start digging or buying plants, take time to imagine your ideal garden. Consider how you want to use the space. Do you want a relaxing retreat, a place for entertaining or a space that welcomes wildlife?

Browse gardening magazines, websites and social media for inspiration. Sketch out ideas, noting the features that appeal to you, such as a wildflower meadow, a formal patio or a vegetable plot.

Outlining your vision early should help to guide every decision you make during the design and build process.

Plan the layout

Once you have a clear vision, it’s time to plan the layout. Begin by measuring your outdoor space and drawing a scale plan. Mark out existing features like trees, sheds and boundaries.

Divide the garden into zones according to different uses. For example, a space for dining, a lawn for children to play or a shaded corner for peaceful relaxation. Consider the flow between these areas and if any paths will be needed to bridge the gaps.

Think about orientation and how the sun moves throughout the day, placing seating and plant beds accordingly.

Choose the right plants

The right plants should make your garden more beautiful and easier to maintain. Consider the soil type, climate and the amount of sunlight each area receives and choose plants that suit these conditions.

For a quaint, cottage garden look, opt for roses, lavender and foxgloves. Or, if you prefer a contemporary design, go for ornamental grasses, agapanthus and bamboo. Buying flower bulbs and seeds is more cost-effective if you’re planting large areas.

A mix of perennials, annuals, shrubs and trees should invite year-round interest. But always consider the required maintenance – you don’t want to overwhelm yourself!

Add garden features

These add character and structure to your space. Consider including elements like a water feature, pergola or raised beds.

A pond or water fountain can create a tranquil atmosphere, while a pergola can provide shade and a structure for climbing plants. Raised beds are excellent for growing vegetables or creating defined or staggered planting areas.

If space allows, consider adding a greenhouse or shed. Both can be practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Personal touches

Your dream garden should reflect your personality and sense of style. Personal touches like statues, handmade furniture or quirky planters may be just what you’re looking for.

Incorporate your favourite colours in planting schemes or when painting fences and sheds. Recycled and upcycled materials can create unique garden décor, adding more meaning to the space you create.

Finally, think about creating some hidden gems. A secluded bench surrounded by calming plants or a winding path leading to a secret corner helps to make your garden something truly unique and special.
