Finding Your Perfect Greek Island Holiday

Issue 109

When thinking about visiting Greek islands your mind often conjures images of Mykonos’ whitewashed streets and Santorini’s iconic sunsets, but holidays in Greece offer so much more than these two go-to islands. While they’re undeniably beautiful, their popularity means they come with high prices, packed streets and an experience tailored more to visitors than to authentic island life. Venture beyond these highly popular destinations to find a world of diverse landscapes, rich history and genuine hospitality.

Consider your interests

Each Greek island has its own character. If history fascinates you, beyond Santorini, Crete and Rhodes stand out. Crete is home to the Minoan Palace of Knossos, an archaeological site offering insight into Europe’s earliest civilisation, while Rhodes’ medieval Old Town, built by the Knights Hospitaller, transports you to the age of Crusaders.

If beaches are your priority, head to Naxos for its long stretches of golden sand or Milos, where hidden coves and crystal-clear waters create a paradise for swimmers. Hikers should consider Andros, with its lush trails and cascading waterfalls, or Samothrace, where the climb to the top of Mount Fengari is rewarded with breathtaking views. For nightlife, Ios provides a more affordable and equally lively alternative to Mykonos.

What is your budget?

Your budget will shape your experience, and choosing the right island can make a significant difference. If you’re after luxury, Crete delivers world-class resorts, including Stella Island Luxury Resort & Spa, an adults-only retreat where overwater bungalows and private pools create an indulgent escape.

Travellers seeking mid-range options will find plenty of choice in Paros, an island with stylish accommodation, excellent dining and beautiful beaches without Mykonos’ price tag. Skiathos also fits well in this category, offering charming seaside hotels and a lively atmosphere at reasonable rates.

For those on a budget, islands like Lefkada and Thassos provide stunning landscapes, affordable guesthouses and great local tavernas where you can enjoy authentic Greek cuisine without the hefty bill.

Think about your travel style

For a romantic getaway, smaller islands like Koufonisia or Paxos offer equally dreamy to the popular Santorini settings without the crowds. These islands are perfect for lazy days by the sea, long lunches and uninterrupted sunset views.

If you’re travelling with family, Halkidiki is an excellent choice. Its shallow, child-friendly beaches, abundance of activities and easy accessibility from mainland Greece make it perfect for a stress-free holiday. Corfu is another great option, combining history and family-friendly resorts.

Solo travellers looking for a mix of relaxation and social opportunities should consider Naxos or Syros. Both offer safe environments, welcoming locals and a blend of beaches, culture and nightlife at a more relaxed pace than their party-heavy neighbours.

For group trips, islands with a variety of activities work best. Zakynthos, known for its lively beach clubs and natural beauty, offers a balance of adventure and relaxation.

Choosing the right Greek island isn’t just about following the crowd. Think about what excites you most and step away from the obvious choices and you’ll discover a side of Greece that feels personal, unspoiled and unforgettable.
