In Conversation With Martin Crammond, Director At Carney Consultancy And Carney Cdm.

Issue 81

What is your role at Carney Consultancy and Carney CDM?

I am technical director at Carney Consultancy. We are a health and safety, training specialist working in the construction and engineering sectors, established in 2002 by Angela Carney. Team members come from a contracting and subcontracting background and have worked, as consultants, with some of the North East’s main contractors. We work with a variety of small to medium builders, specialist sub-contractors, management companies and large PLCs.

I am also a director at Carney CDM which provides principal designer services in line with the CDM Regulations 2015. The company has just recently been launched and comprises of Caroline Morton plus directors, Angela Carney and David Wadds.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety. Every day is always different. I am very passionate about the construction sector, it is very dynamic and the people are so friendly.

I also enjoy watching the team at Carney Consultancy progress within the business and grow within their roles.

What is your proudest business achievement?

Becoming technical director of Carney Consultancy in October 2021 and director of Carney CDM in 2022. I always work hard and push myself. There is also a lot to be said for apprenticeships. I started my career as a joiner and worked my way through the ranks, building my knowledge and had a determination to continually learn and better myself.

What challenges have you encountered?

At the start of my career, I was staggered at how vast the construction sector is. There is a lot of information that you need to be aware of and you always need to keep your finger on the pulse.

How has the industry changed since you started your career?

So much has changed. The skills shortage is a huge issue at the moment. We need to educate young people to all of the career opportunities available to them within the built environment and construction sectors and highlight the benefits and progression paths.

How do you like to unwind?

I am passionate about motorsports and spend a lot of my spare time racing. I also enjoy getting away in the campervan with my partner Rebecca and dog, Charlie.
