When people first come to see me, they’re usually looking for an office. But what they really need is something a bit more personal than that.
Every business I meet is different. Some are just starting out, two people, big ideas, and not quite enough room at the kitchen table anymore. Others are growing fast and need space that can keep up with them. And then there are the established teams who want a fresh environment that reflects who they are now, not who they were five years ago.
That’s why I never start with the space itself. I start with the people.
I’ll always ask a few simple questions. How does your team actually work day to day? Do you need quiet focus, or are you constantly collaborating? Are you planning to grow in the next year? What kind of environment helps you do your best work?
Because the truth is, the “perfect” office looks completely different depending on the answers.
At Hoults Yard, we’re lucky to have a real mix of spaces, from smaller setups for a couple of desks right through to larger offices for growing teams. But it’s not just about size. It’s about how a space feels, how it functions, and how it supports the way you work.
I’ve seen businesses arrive needing just a couple of desks, then gradually expand as their team grows. I’ve watched collaborations spark simply because people share the same building. And I’ve had clients tell me they feel more motivated just by being in a space that actually works for them.
That’s the part I enjoy most, helping people find somewhere they can see themselves, not just somewhere they can fit.
Because an office should be more than four walls and a few desks. It should give you room to think, to grow, and to build something.
So, when someone walks through the door and says, “We’re just looking for an office,” I always smile a little.
