Slowing Down In A World That Won’t

Issue 121

Most of us imagine that slowing down is something we’ll do later.

“When I get through my to-do list…” “When work settles…” “When life feels a bit more organised…”

But life rarely offers that perfect moment. The list never ends. Even on the rare occasion it does seem to end, we continue to add to it, or fill the stillness with something else, as if we are hiding from the stillness.

We move from one task to the next without ever arriving in the moment we’re actually in.

And yet, the truth is…

You don’t have to wait to slow down. You can slow down now.

Why We Rush

Rushing isn’t just a habit, it’s a nervous system pattern. When we’re constantly busy, the body holds tension as if something urgent is always happening. The shoulders tighten, the breath shortens, the mind races to keep up with the pace we’ve set.

But neuroscientists have found something interesting: When the mind becomes still, the brain actually uses less energy.. yet we feel more alive.

Slowing down isn’t laziness. It’s clarity. It’s allowing us to return to the body, in the present moment. To find calm, without distraction.

I have been reminded of this recently. I have had such a big To-Do list, rushing from one task to the next, but my regular meditation has allowed me to be aware of this internal busy-ness. Meaning I have been able to pause, just for a few seconds. And in that tiny pause, everything softens for me, the shoulders, the breath, the noise. It’s a reminder that peace doesn’t arrive when life becomes quiet. It arrives when we become quiet.

A Simple Way to Begin

One of the most effective ways to slow down is to reconnect with the body, because the body is always in the present moment, even when the mind is miles ahead. You might simply feel the weight of your body, noticing your feet grounded and supported, the legs softening, the hips widening, the belly moving with the breath. Let the chest open, the shoulders drop, the face loosen. Then sense the whole body as one field of awareness, steady and alive. Even a minute of this changes the pace of the mind, because when the body slows down, the mind follows.

Bring yourself some stillness – Mindful Challenge !

Did you know, we reach for our phones around 150 times a day on average!

Imagine what happens when we check in with ourselves, even once.

The next time you notice yourself mindlessly reaching for your phone during a busy day, see if you can notice this reach. Notice the pull the phone has on you. Ask yourself this… “what am I really going to get from this phone” and instead, simply sit with your eyes closed (or open) and notice the body, rest into it for a few seconds. Notice the breath. And slow down into this calmness.

These small moments create a surprising amount of space, bringing a calmer nervous system and a clearer mind.

Your Mind Is a Snow Globe

There’s a metaphor I love:

Your mind is like a snow globe. Shake it constantly, and everything looks chaotic. Set it down for a moment, and the flakes settle — and suddenly you can see clearly again.

This is what slowing down does. It doesn’t remove the thoughts. It simply stops the shaking.

A Final Thought

Most people don’t need a retreat. They don’t need a week in silence. They don’t need to escape their lives.

They just need a few real moments where they stop shaking the snow globe.

Slowing down isn’t something you find. It’s something you choose. And you can choose it today, even in the middle of your busy, beautiful, complicated life.

Much Love
