What's The Secret?

Issue 127

Over the years I've had the privilege of helping thousands of people transform their health, lose weight, build confidence and completely change their lives. People often ask me what the secret is.

Is it the perfect training programme?

A special diet? The latest fitness trend?

The honest answer is none of these.

The people who stay fit for life aren’t usually the fastest, strongest or naturally most athletic.

They are the people who develop a handful of habits and stick to them. Those habits become part of who they are and that’s why they continue to enjoy good day to day health.

Here are five habits that make them stand out from the rest:

Habit 1- They train even when they don’t feel like it

Nobody wakes up every single morning desperate to exercise. We all have busy days, poor sleep, stressful jobs and family commitments. Motivation comes and goes, but commitment remains. The people who achieve lasting success understand that they don’t need to feel motivated every day. They simply turn up because they know they’ll never regret doing a workout.

Habit 2 – They plan their exercise in advance

If you wait until you have some spare time, chances are you’ll never find it. Life has a habit of filling every available minute. Successful people book their workouts into the diary just as they would an important meeting or appointment. They protect that time because they understand that looking after their health allows them to perform better in every other area of their life.

Habit 3 – They never allow one setback to become a reason to quit

Everyone enjoys a meal out, a birthday celebration or a holiday, that’s part of living a balanced life. The difference is that successful people don’t allow one indulgence to turn into a bad week or a bad month. They simply enjoy the occasion, then get straight back into their healthy routine. It’s all about that consistency!

Habit 4 – They find exercise they genuinely enjoy

Fitness should never feel like a punishment, hether it’s lifting weights, joining a Beach Bootcamp, taking a long walk with friends or pushing yourself through a challenging VersaClimber session. The best form of exercise is the one you’ll continue to do. When you enjoy the journey, staying active becomes a lifestyle rather than a chore.

Habit 5 – They surround themselves with positive people

I’ve seen first hand how powerful this can be. When you train alongside encouraging people who want to see you succeed, everything becomes easier. Good habits are contagious allowing your confidence to grow, accountability increases and before long you begin achieving things you never believed possible.

Staying fit for life isn’t about finding a miracle programme or chasing the latest social media trend. It’s about making small, sensible choices every day and repeating them often enough that they become second nature.

David’s summing up

Don’t underestimate the power of consistency. A 30 minute workout, a healthy meal, an early night or a walk after work may not seem life changing today, but repeated week after week, month after month and year after year, becomes the foundation of a healthier, happier and longer life.
