Stay On Track

Avoiding running injuries before your half marathon.

You’ve put in the miles, pushed through the weather and carved out time you didn’t think you had. As race day approaches, whether it’s the Great North Run or another big event, you’re fitter, stronger and ready to go. The last thing you need now is an injury that derails your hard work.

Most running injuries don’t arrive with a dramatic “snap”. They creep in quietly: a tight calf, a niggly heel, a knee that doesn’t feel quite right. It’s easy to brush these off, especially when your training plan says you should be running. But those early warning signs matter. They’re often linked to training load, warmup habits (skip the long static stretches before running), recovery, footwear, strength, flexibility or running technique.

Common culprits include muscle strains – the calves, hamstrings and quads are all vulnerable when fatigue, dehydration or sudden intensity spikes hit. Tendon issues, like Achilles irritation, often start with morning stiffness or discomfort at the beginning of a run. Plantar fasciitis can make those first steps out of bed feel like you’re walking on a stone. Then there’s knee pain, shin pain or general aches that don’t settle between sessions.

The key message is simple: pain that keeps returning, changes your running style or worsens with training should not be ignored. It’s a sign your body wants attention.

Here’s the good news: preventing injury doesn’t mean stopping. A physiotherapy assessment can pinpoint what’s going on and help you adjust your training without losing momentum. Video analysis, hands-on treatment, strength work, shockwave therapy, mobility drills, taping and a structured returntorunning plan can all keep you moving forward. And yes regular sports massage is a gamechanger for keeping muscles fresh.

At SWISSPHSYIO, we know how much your race means to you. Whether you’re managing a niggle or simply want reassurance before the big day, we’re here to help you stay healthy, confident and ready to enjoy every mile.

Take the first step toward your winning recovery.
