On Course To Change

Issue 124

Embracing change while honouring tradition at Northumberland Golf Club.

It is instinctive to be cautious about change; we often find comfort in the familiar. However, as many business leaders can attest, stagnation can lead to regression.

This principle is at the forefront of James Thomas’s vision as the General Manager of Northumberland Golf Club. He is dedicated to ensuring that the club not only continues to evolve but also respects its rich heritage, which dates back to its founding in 1898 at High Gosforth Park.

As the landscape of golf continues to transform, members and players now seek amenities and experiences that were unimaginable 130 years ago. Under Thomas’s leadership, Northumberland Golf Club is committed to enhancing the member experience while preserving the historical significance that makes it a cherished institution in the golf community.

“It’s a balancing act to ensure the course and clubhouse retain their unique atmosphere and character, but are fit for purpose in 2026 and beyond,” said James. “We want to ensure Northumberland Golf Club remains instantly recognisable, but offers everything that members, players and visitors can quite rightly expect.”

James has a successful history of improving the fortunes of golf clubs, both in terms of the golf course itself and the operational and financial aspects of running a business. Since he arrived in 2023, he’s undertaken a full review of the club’s operations.

“We mustn’t forget this is a sporting facility so it’s important to ensure that the course is always in top condition with redesigned bunkers, improved drainage and true greens.”

Head out of the clubhouse and you will find a new practice putting green, driving range and chipping area. If you are trying to improve your game, you can make full use of the swing studio with one of 3 PGA Golf Professionals.

“Without stating the obvious, the reason why Northumberland Golf Club has been such a success is because people enjoy playing golf here. The course and our additional golfing facilities allow players to enjoy a challenging round in stunning surroundings. However, members and visitors also enjoy our hospitality and the ambience of our clubhouse.”

A new Head Chef is now in place and the quality and variety of food is winning rave reviews.

The first thing everyone sees when arriving at the club is the new pro shop and reception. This has been completely refurbished and is part of the overall upgrade to facilities. The changes have elevated the club to the forefront of members’ clubs in the North East.

“A lot of work has taken place behind the scenes, both within the clubhouse and on the course,” adds James. “We have reorganised the staff structure, have more opportunities for businesses to get involved with the club, and are emphasising the importance of sustainability. The climate is changing and we have plans in place to be ready. We are moving to finer grasses on our greens, which are not heavily dependant on water and are much more disease resistant, we have changed the way we manage and maintain our golf course, and we are managing the use of water efficiently”.

James Thomas is ensuring that Northumberland Golf Club has evolved to be fit for purpose in 2026 and beyond.
