History On Your Doorstep

Issue 91

A wedding and function venue you'll never forget! We're probably all guilty of this. We travel all over the UK and further afield for business and holiday reasons, but we don't really know the place where we live and/or work.

It’s very tempting to hop into a car and drive to various historic or natural attractions, but what about those places you either walk past or ride past?

Take the 12th Century Norman castle in Newcastle.

Yes, Newcastle really does have a castle. The clue’s in the name!

Been there?

No? Well you don’t know what you’re missing.

Not only is Newcastle Castle a stunning place to visit on its own, it is also exciting for a host of reasons.

Weddings, business meetings, conferences, film shows, talks, live shows, lectures, theatre… and of course fascinating guided tours.

On average there are 33,000 visitors to Newcastle Castle every year. A good proportion of that figure are tourists visiting the area…many from overseas.

There are also school parties who can enjoy a day at the Castle learning about Medieval Britain and having a mixture of fun and learning in workshops.

“Being well known by someone on the other side of the world but is a complete mystery to someone who lives a couple of miles down the road, is an anomaly which affects a lot of historic attractions,” said David Silk, Team and Learning Manager for Newcastle Castle. “We’re really successful in attracting visitors from outside the region, but we’re keen to welcome more visitors from here in the North East. We want to make Newcastle Castle into the heart of Newcastle.

“We’ve launched an Annual Pass which allows multiple visits. It means that once someone has paid for their initial entry to Newcastle Castle, they can keep returning as often as they like without the need to pay again. As well as the Castle Keep itself, you can also visit the Black Gate which is the Castle’s original fortified gatehouse. Prior to 2015 it hadn’t been accessible to the public for a long time, but a grant of money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund brought it back to life for visitors.”

The Annual Pass represents terrific value.

Adults (16-64yrs) £9.95

Seniors (65+) £8.95

Children (5-15) £6.50

Infant (4 and under) Free.

The family ticket is also worth considering.

2 adults & 2 children or 1 adult & 3 children £28

Remember, this is what you pay on your first visit to Newcastle Castle, but you will then be given a membership card which allows you free subsequent visits.

“We’re fully licensed for weddings and functions,” adds David. “A photograph of the bride and groom taken from the Castle ramparts with an iconic backdrop of the River Tyne and the bridges, will provide stunning, unique memories.

You can also hire the whole castle for your corporate events. We run various activities, workshops, and functions…and can even put on a Medieval Tavern for you! We hold film nights throughout the year. You can watch everything from family favourites to cult classics in our stunning Great Hall. We run many events at the Castle, from historical talks to ghost hunts, there really is something for everyone at Newcastle Castle.

Something else which is proving popular are various guided walks around Newcastle by staff and experts from Newcastle Castle. They will take you to places that we’re certain you won’t know existed.

If you are interested in visiting Newcastle Castle, or using it as a venue for your wedding, corporate event or even as a dramatic film location, the best idea is to check out their website. You’ll find contact details as well as seeing which films, theatre events talks etc are coming up.
