Families come in many forms but the strongest often share a defining characteristic: they celebrate individuality while remaining united by common values.
That thought has been at the forefront of our minds as The Royal Grammar School Newcastle has taken the significant step of creating the RGS Newcastle Group of Schools and, within that, welcoming Westfield School into our family. It is a decision rooted not in a desire for uniformity but in a belief that schools are at their strongest when they are confident enough to be themselves while working together towards a shared purpose.
When people hear the phrase “group of schools”, they sometimes imagine a process of standardisation, where every school becomes a version of every other school. That is not our vision. In fact, our vision is quite the opposite.
I think of the RGS Newcastle Group of Schools as a family with two children: RGS Newcastle and Westfield School. They are siblings but they are certainly not identical twins.
Anyone who has spent time with brothers and sisters knows that each child develops their own personality, their own interests, their own strengths and their own way of seeing the world. Sometimes those differences are striking. One may be academic and analytical; another creative and adventurous. One may thrive in a large group; another in a smaller, more intimate setting. Good parents do not seek to erase those differences. They nurture them. They celebrate them. They recognise that individuality is something precious.
The same is true of schools.
RGS Newcastle has been shaped over five centuries of history. As one of the country’s leading independent schools, it has developed a distinctive culture built around academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, ambition, service and a deep commitment to helping young people fulfil their potential.
Westfield School has its own equally distinctive identity. It has built a reputation for providing an exceptional education within a nurturing environment where children are encouraged to develop confidence, character and a strong sense of self. The atmosphere, traditions and experiences that define Westfield are cherished by its pupils, families and staff.
These differences are not obstacles to partnership. They are precisely what make the partnership valuable.
If every member of a family were identical, family life would be rather dull. Equally, if every school offered exactly the same experience, the educational landscape would be poorer for it. Diversity of approach, character and culture enriches education. It gives families meaningful choice and allows schools to learn from one another.
The creation of the RGS Newcastle Group of Schools recognises this truth. Our aim is not to create two identical institutions but rather to create a framework within which both schools can flourish while retaining the qualities that make them unique.
Of course, families are held together by more than affection alone. Beneath our individual differences lie the characteristics we inherit. We share DNA.
While RGS Newcastle and Westfield may express themselves in different ways, they are united by a shared set of values that run through both organisations like a common genetic code. We believe in the transformational power of education. We believe that every young person deserves to be known, valued and challenged. We believe in developing character alongside achievement. We believe in kindness, integrity, service and ambition. We believe that schools should prepare young people not only to succeed in examinations but also to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
These values are the DNA of our family. They provide a strong foundation upon which both schools can build their futures.
There are also practical benefits to being part of a family. Families support one another. They share experience. They provide encouragement during challenges and celebrate successes together.
By bringing our schools together, we create opportunities for collaboration that will benefit pupils, staff and families alike. Professional expertise can be shared. Resources can be strengthened. New opportunities can be developed. Innovation can be encouraged. Most importantly, each school gains the support of a wider community while retaining its own identity and traditions.
For Westfield, joining the RGS Group of Schools offers long-term strength, stability and opportunity. For RGS Newcastle, it provides the chance to extend our educational mission and learn from a school whose own traditions and achievements deserve enormous respect.
This partnership is therefore not about one school changing another. It is about two excellent schools choosing to walk forward together.
As any parent will tell you, the success of a family is not measured by whether every child follows the same path. RGS Newcastle will continue to be proudly RGS Newcastle. Westfield School will continue to be proudly Westfield School.
