Pupils Celebrate British Science Week 2026

Issue 122

Pupils across Mowden Hall enjoyed a week of experiments, demonstrations and inspiring talks as part of British Science Week 2026.

The nationwide celebration, organised by the British Science Association, aims to inspire young people to explore science, technology, engineering and maths and to recognise the role science plays in everyday life.

The week began with Year 8 girls leading mixed-age teams in researching female STEM “superheroes”. Each group created a poster exploring their scientist’s journey, achievements and impact on the world of science.

Year 7 pupils then entertained the school with an outdoor science show featuring exploding poppers, the classic Coke and Mentos reaction, floating tattoos, disappearing ink and even turning water into “wine”. The Science Department also welcomed Year 1 and Year 2 pupils from Pre Prep into the laboratories, where they watched a dramatic Elephant’s Toothpaste demonstration before creating their own erupting volcanoes.

On Thursday evening, pupils and families enjoyed a STEM Roadshow from Gordon Montgomery of Oundle School Outreach, who amazed the audience with mathematical tricks and puzzles. The week concluded with an assembly from Christoph Oing of the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, who spoke about his work in cancer research and the persistence required to make scientific breakthroughs.

Head of Mowden Hall, Phil Sturt, said: “It was fantastic to see pupils of all ages so engaged and enthusiastic about science. British Science Week is a wonderful opportunity to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists.”
