Darlington College Invests In Skills As Recruitment Continues To Grow

Issue 128

Darlington College has begun the new academic year on a high, welcoming significant growth across full-time education, apprenticeships and higher education programmes while continuing to invest in the facilities and training needed to support the region's future workforce.

The college has seen an exceptionally strong recruitment cycle, with increased numbers of full-time learners choosing to study at the college, growing demand from employers for apprenticeships and continued expansion in higher education provision, in partnership with Teesside University. The positive enrolment figures reflect increasing confidence from students, parents and businesses in the college’s ability to provide high-quality education and develop the skills employers need within the region and beyond.

As industries across the North East face ongoing skills shortages, particularly in technical, construction and engineering sectors, Darlington College remains focused on ensuring learners have access to industry-standard facilities and training environments that prepare them for successful careers.

A recent example is the college’s £30,000 investment in its electrical department, where workshops and practical skills bays have undergone a complete refurbishment to support the next generation of electricians.

The improvements include fully reboarded skills bays, restored workbenches, upgraded testing equipment and the refurbishment of existing resources, creating a modern learning environment for both students and apprentices undertaking Level 1 to Level 3 electrical qualifications.

The investment comes at a time when demand for skilled electricians continues to rise nationally. Industry forecasts suggest that around 230,000 electricians will be required across the UK by 2030 as the country transitions towards greener technologies, smarter infrastructure and more sustainable energy systems.

Darlington College invests in skills as recruitment continues to grow Darlington College has begun the new academic year on a high, welcoming significant growth across full-time education, apprenticeships and higher education programmes while continuing to invest in the facilities and training needed to support the region’s future workforce. Darlington College’s electrical programmes are designed to help meet this demand, offering clear progression routes from entry-level training through to advanced qualifications and apprenticeships. Importantly, learners who do not yet hold the required maths qualifications can study these alongside their electrical training, helping remove barriers to entry and opening up career opportunities for a wider range of young people.

Senior Lecturer Gary Cook said: “Industry is crying out for electricians and the Government also wants to see an upskilled workforce.

“It is very well-paid work and they will never be out of a job. Electricians can work for big or small companies or for themselves, in this country and abroad.

“The new workshops will benefit all levels and feed into the apprenticeships which employers asking us to find learners for them.”

The curriculum has evolved alongside the industry, covering both domestic and commercial installations. Learners develop practical skills ranging from basic wiring and electrical safety through to specialist areas including armoured cabling, data and Wi-Fi systems, smart home technologies and renewable energy solutions.

The growing importance of technologies such as electric vehicle charging infrastructure, solar energy systems, air and ground source heat pumps and automated smart home controls means today’s trainees are preparing for an industry that looks very different from that of a decade ago.

A key strength of the programme is its close connection with local employers. By working closely with businesses, the college ensures that training reflects current industry requirements while also creating progression opportunities into apprenticeships and employment.

The courses continue to attract a diverse range of learners, including an increasing number of women entering the profession. Demonstrating the calibre of talent emerging from the college, one recent female trainee electrician progressed to the national finals of the prestigious Spark of the Year competition.

For regional employers, the message is clear. As economic growth and infrastructure projects increase demand for skilled technical workers, Darlington College is continuing to invest in the people, facilities and partnerships needed to support that growth.

The college’s strong recruitment across full-time programmes, apprenticeships and higher education highlights both the ambition of learners and the confidence employers place in the institution. Combined with targeted investments such as the refurbishment of the electrical department, Darlington College is strengthening the pipeline of skilled talent that businesses across the region will depend upon in the years ahead.

With student numbers continuing to rise and employer engagement going from strength to strength, the college remains committed to ensuring that people of all ages and backgrounds can access high-quality education, develop industry-relevant skills and progress into rewarding careers, helping to drive both individual success and regional prosperity.
