Your Eye On The Region

Issue 79

Your eye on the region with Jeff Wilkinson, head of operations at Elanders UK

Did you grow up in the North East or did you decide to locate here in later life?

I was born and raised in the West End of Newcastle. I have lived in the North East for the majority of my life but have been fortunate to work across the UK and in parts of Europe.

What do you think it means to be a business person in the North East of England?

The North East is a unique area with a lot of talented people. As a business person from the region, I feel you have a responsibility to be able to make sure there is progression paths and resources that are available to tap into this.

What is your favourite aspect of life in the North East?

Being close to friends and family. This has always been important to me and is one of the reasons why I have mainly been based in the region. Everything is also very convenient, you can be a ‘stones throw’ away from our beautiful coastlines, cities and beaches. There is always something to do and see.

We also have very good transport links which makes it accessible to reach other areas of the UK and further afield in a relatively short timeframe.

Where do you like to eat out?

I love Spanish cuisine, so it has to be El Coto and El Torero in Newcastle.

Are the people really friendlier?

We are definitely a warm and engaging bunch, but I don’t think we are alone in this. For example, I have worked in Liverpool and its people have a similar sense of resilience, pride and humour.

Do you think living and working in the Northeast offers the same opportunities as elsewhere?

I would say a lot of this is based on perception. From an outside point of view, the region can be seen as more remote geographically from a supply chain or distribution point of view, but I don’t think that this is the case at all. With everything that has gone on globally over the past few years it shows that the UK and places like the North East can support the economy.

Have you had any experience of working elsewhere and how did it compare?

I have been fortunate in that I have enjoyed working throughout the UK and spells in Europe. Every place offers you opportunities, it’s up to individuals to pursue them. Having said that I have always been proud to call the North East home.

What is the best view of the region?

As a Newcastle United fan, it has to be St James’ Park. When it is packed and flags are out in full force you can’t beat that sense of pride and the atmosphere is something else.
