In corporate finance, much of the focus is on growth, transactions and value creation. But the conversations that stay with me are often about people, community and impact.
Over time, I’ve noticed something consistent: the leaders who make the biggest difference are often the happiest. That may seem at odds with a world focused on profit and performance, but there’s truth behind it. When we help others, we feel better – we’re wired that way.
For me, this is personal.
I was born and raised in Newcastle, the son of an immigrant, in a community where people looked out for each other. That’s why for me, giving back has always been a responsibility, not a choice. Success means more when it lifts others with it.
That spirit runs deep in the North East – a region shaped by resilience, where communities support one another through change and challenge. I see it every day in business owners backing local causes and leaders supporting their teams when it matters most.
Doing good doesn’t come at the expense of business success. Purpose-led organisations build stronger teams, deeper loyalty and greater resilience.
That’s why initiatives like CEO Sleepout matter. Spending just one night outside your comfort zone can give a real insight into the challenges of homelessness in our communities.
It’s a simple way to raise awareness, funds and perspective.
If you can, I’d encourage you to get involved – whether at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light or Darlington’s Mowden Park this November. ceosleepout.co.uk
At the end of our careers, we won’t remember an extra percentage point of margin. We’ll remember the difference we made.
Because when our communities thrive, we all do.
