Mentoring is a long-term relationship, it's not an overnight fix it solution, its valuable time together as a mentee and a mentor to plan, develop, progress, reflect and review.
1. Connectivity – as a first step make sure you and your mentor fit, match, connect.
2. Contract & commit – agree timings, dates, session length and location so that you are 110% committed.
3. Clear expectations – what would you really like to achieve through mentoring, where do you need to focus your energy and efforts to encourage growth and development?
4. Communications – talk openly and honestly to your mentor throughout.
5. Conversations – have conversations with lots of questions, so that you can create clarity, build confidence and find your own options.
6. Challenges – welcome the challenging thought processes you may find yourself faced with, this is only to open up new ways of thinking, new perspectives and new progress.
7. Champion proactivity – which topic do you need to discuss and why, feel free to offer up some suggestions to your mentor who can then plan for the session so that your time is super valuable together.
8. Channel ownership – take absolute responsibility for what you would like to achieve following your mentoring sessions and most importantly adopt a growth mindset.
9. Check your progress – shift your objectives to keep them aligned with your overall personal and professional goals.
10. Collect feedback – yes it can be uncomfortable, yes it can be a little awkward, but with feedback you can reflect review, develop and shine.
