Over £5,000 Raised For Charity Dedicated To Construction Workers

Issue 113

North Tyneside-based, Carney Consultancy, has raised £5,245 at a charity golf day in support of The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.

The money raised will fund vital support services including a 24/7 helpline, mental health training and on-site assistance for workers in crisis.

There was a strong turnout from across the regional construction and development sector, including Northern Ceilings & Partitions Limited, Compass Developments (NE) Ltd, Atlas Certification, Trevella Jobs, True North Construction, PJS Brickwork (Teams 1 and 2), Shadbolt, H Malone & Sons, Ian Costello, ADS, John N Dunn Group, MGM Construction (Phil Burridge), STP Construction Ltd, Adderstone Civils, NCBF, Baileygomm and North Wealth Management.

The winning team was John N Dunn Group, with Atlas Certification and Carney Consultancy taking second and third places.

Operating nationally, the first branch of The Lighthouse Charity was established in 1956 in the North East. It delivers support to the construction sector across the UK and is the only charity that provides emotional, physical and financial wellbeing help to workers and their families. It receives no public funding and relies on the generosity of those within the industry to continue its vital work.

According to data from The Lighthouse Charity, two construction workers take their own lives every working day in the UK. Over 55% of construction workers report experiencing mental health issues, yet many feel unable to speak out due to stigma.

Carney Consultancy is a long-term supporter of The Lighthouse Charity with managing director, Angela Carney, serving on its North East board.

Angela, said: “Mental health continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry. Through The Lighthouse Charity, we’re working hard to change the culture and make sure no one feels they have to struggle alone. There is a growing collective understanding that more needs to be done to address the shocking statistics and raise awareness so that more people feel able to speak out and seek help.”

Established in 2002, Carney Consultancy provides health and safety consultancy and training for construction and engineering firms. With a team drawn from both main contracting and subcontracting backgrounds, the company has become a trusted partner for small to medium-sized builders, specialist subcontractors and management companies.

This isn’t the first time the company has raised funds for The Lighthouse Charity. In 2023, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, members of the Carney team raised £3,830 by taking part in the Great North Run.

Martin Crammond, director at Carney Consultancy, said: “We’re proud to continue supporting The Lighthouse Charity and grateful to all the companies who joined us for this year’s golf day. Their generosity helps ensure construction workers across the North East have access to the support they need when they need it most.”
