A former professional footballer, Connor’s first career followed a path that ends far earlier than most. While many of us imagine retiring after 60, Connor had to think about life beyond the pitch by his mid-30s-long before most of us even start that conversation.
“I started at Sunderland Football Club when I was 16 and stayed there until I was 21,” says Connor. “I then had spells with Hartlepool, Blackpool, Halifax, North Ferriby, Gateshead, Morpeth Town, North Shields and finally Newcastle Blue Star. It’s been a fantastic journey, but with Olivers Financial growing, I knew it was time to hang up my boots. I’ve experienced football from the Championship right through to Non-League, but I always knew one day it would come to an end. Of course, in football that happens much sooner than for most people reading this.”
That experience gave Connor a unique perspective. “It’s meant I can now relate to clients who are planning for the future because I’ve been in their shoes,” he explains. “I’ve been on the receiving end of financial advice-sometimes good, sometimes not so good-and I understand how confusing it can feel when you don’t speak the same language as your adviser. That experience has shaped how I approach my role today.”
Having always been drawn to finance, Connor’s move into the profession was a natural progression. Now a fully qualified financial adviser with a DipPFS (Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning), he brings the same discipline and focus that defined his football career to his work in financial services.
