How A Harrogate Business Turned Local Success Into International Growth

Issue 127

Building an international business doesn’t always mean leaving your local identity behind. IDHL’s story started in Harrogate in 2000 and, over the following 25 years, grew to include offices across the UK and in New York.

That growth didn’t happen in one leap. Instead, IDHL added digital specialisms and entered new markets as the services its clients needed changed.

For other Harrogate businesses with ambitions beyond the local market, its journey shows how local roots can provide a foundation for much wider growth.

Building from a specialist foundation

IDHL’s story began with Webevents Ltd, which initially specialised in online exhibitions. As the internet changed how businesses reached customers, the company developed its search engine optimisation (SEO) capabilities and grew its client base.

By 2003, The Web Marketing Group had emerged, supported by its own in-house tools and software. A decade later, WMG operated as a Search and Performance marketing agency, while the addition of NetConstruct in 2013 brought web development into the wider group.

A pattern was beginning to take shape. When clients needed new forms of digital support, the business developed those services internally or added teams that already specialised in them.

Expanding expertise and reach

A broader range of services developed alongside expansion into new locations.

In 2012, IDHL established Ingenuity Digital and opened a London office in response to growing demand for digital marketing in the capital. Further expansion followed. The acquisition of Pinpoint Designs in 2017 added expertise and an office in Leeds, while IDHL opened a Manchester office in 2018.

At the same time, the business continued to add specific services. Equation launched in 2019 with a focus on Paid Media, while the acquisition of Wired+ added email marketing technology. By 2022, the acquisition of Ampersand meant nine agencies and more than 400 people made up IDHL.

The business’s growth, therefore, wasn’t only about opening offices. Adding specialist teams allowed IDHL to provide clients with more digital services within the same group.

Bringing the pieces together

However, adding more specialist businesses raised another question: how could those teams work together?

IDHL Group had provided a central parent company since 2013, and the business adopted the “connected agency group” positioning in 2019. The next major step came in 2024, when IDHL consolidated eight brands under one identity. Fostr continued with its own identity as a specialist eCommerce agency.

The consolidation changed how IDHL presented much of the expertise it had accumulated. Instead of operating those capabilities through eight separate brands, it brought them under the IDHL name so clients could access them through a more unified agency proposition.

Taking the business international

The same year brought another significant development. In 2024, IDHL opened its first US office in New York.

The move followed opportunities among US clients and existing UK clients with operations in the country. Rather than an isolated jump from Harrogate to New York, IDHL entered the US after more than two decades spent adding digital services and establishing offices elsewhere in the UK.

For an ambitious local business, that sequence matters. Entering a new market becomes less dependent on finding customers from scratch when existing demand already gives the business a reason to establish a presence there.

Growth beyond the international milestone

New York wasn’t the end of IDHL’s expansion. In 2025, the acquisition of Southampton-based The MTM Agency added creative and strategic services.

IDHL also acquired Vervaunt in this year, bringing eCommerce consultancy alongside community building and performance marketing capabilities into the business.

Today, IDHL’s services cover a much broader range of client needs, including:

· Performance marketing, including SEO and paid media

. Digital and traditional PR, from online campaigns to media relations

· Web and technology, including website development, eCommerce platforms, replatforming and conversion rate optimisation

· Strategy and consultancy, helping businesses set direction and identify opportunities

· Brand and creative, covering brand development, creative systems and campaigns

· Data and digital analytics, supporting measurement and decisions across digital activity

What 25 years of growth shows

The individual services have changed considerably since Webevents launched in 2000. However, the underlying pattern remains visible. IDHL has added services as client requirements have changed and entered new locations when demand created an opportunity to do so.

For businesses in Harrogate, IDHL’s 25-year journey offers a useful reminder. Your location can remain part of your identity without determining where you can do business. Growing beyond your local market depends less on distance than on having services customers need and enough demand to justify the next move.
