Connecting Talent With Opportunity: David Taylor's Recruitment Story

Issue 122

Tell us a bit about your background.

I was born in Ashington and moved around quite a bit growing up due to my parents’ work. We spent time in Exeter and Norwich before eventually settling on Teesside.

I studied Business Management at university in Newcastle and completed a couple of summer placements with Howie White Resourcing. After graduating, I joined the company full time and later took over the running of the business in 2022.

What is your role at the company?

I’m the Managing Director of Howie White Resourcing.

For those who may not know, what does Howie White Resourcing do?

Howie White Resourcing was set up to offer a different approach to recruitment. Instead of relying on a database of candidates, we proactively search for the right people for each role.

We use our networks, contacts, and industry knowledge to identify and approach the best candidates for our clients.

What makes your approach to recruitment different?

We don’t rely on a list of job seekers already on a database. Instead, we actively go out and find the right person for the role.

We take the time to understand not only the technical requirements of the job but also the culture and values of the business. When you understand what a company truly needs, you’re far more likely to find the right person.

What services do you provide?

We provide search-based recruitment services. That means we identify and approach suitable candidates directly rather than waiting for applications. It sounds straightforward, but it requires experience, strong networks, and the ability to build trust with both clients and candidates.

What types of roles do you typically recruit for?

We work across a wide variety of sectors and roles. Because our approach is search-based, we can adapt to different industries and focus on finding the right individual for each appointment.

What do businesses often get wrong about recruitment?

Sometimes companies focus only on the technical skills required for a role and overlook cultural fit. The most successful hires tend to be those who align with the organisation’s values and team dynamics as well as having the right experience.

What were your career ambitions growing up?

I always knew I wanted to run my own business one day, although I wasn’t sure what industry it would be in.

It makes me proud that I’ve achieved that goal, but now the focus is on improving as a leader and continuing to develop the business.

What skills make someone successful in recruitment?

Strong communication, curiosity, and resilience are all important. Recruitment is about people, so being able to build relationships and understand what motivates both clients and candidates is key.

How has the recruitment industry changed in recent years?

Technology has changed the way people search for jobs and candidates, but the personal element is still incredibly important. Building relationships and having meaningful conversations is something technology can’t replace.

What advice would you give someone looking for a new job?

Be clear about what you want from your next role and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s important that a job is the right fit for you, not just that you meet the job description.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

It’s the cliché of business owners to say there isn’t really a typical day, but it’s true. Every role and client is different.

My day normally starts by taking my daughter to nursery and my son to school, which I really value. After that it’s emails, calls, meetings and work for the rest of the day.

How do you like to unwind outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my wife, our four-year-old son and our 15 month old daughter.

I also enjoy going to watch Newcastle United — although that’s not always relaxing!

What are your plans for the future?

We’re confident in our business model, so there are no major changes planned. The focus is on continuing to grow, improving what we do, and providing a first-class service to our clients.

What advice would you give someone starting a business?

Surround yourself with like-minded people, as well as people who know more than you do.

Build a strong network, set goals, and be prepared for setbacks. If you keep going and stay focused, things will start to fall into place.

What is your company’s mission?

Our mission is to raise standards in the recruitment industry and consistently add value to the businesses we work with.

What has been a highlight of your career so far?

I’d say one of the biggest highlights has been taking on the responsibility of leading the business and shaping its direction. Being able to build on what was already there while putting my own stamp on it and seeing it continue to grow has been incredibly rewarding.
