Julie And Steve Leave Lasting Legacy As Carney Consultancy Continues To Grow

Issue 128

North Tyneside based, Carney Consultancy, has announced the retirement of two longstanding employees, who contributed significantly to the growth of the business.

Established in 2002, the firm is a specialist health, safety, environmental and quality consultancy and training provider operating across the UK for the construction and engineering sectors.

Julie Turner commenced her career with Carney Consultancy as an accounts manager in 2012 with Steve Harkness, joining in 2013 as a construction health and safety consultant.

Both progressed in their respective careers, with Julie moving to the role of training coordinator bringing with her advanced knowledge of accredited training organisations and becoming a key member of the office team.

Steve, became one of Carney’s key senior trainers and mentors, passing on invaluable knowledge to the team, leading to the launch of a dedicated fire safety division in 2024.

During his 13-years at the firm, he completed his PTTLS Teaching & Learning qualification, achieved a NEBOSH Fire Safety & Risk Management certificate, completed the Fire Protection Association Advanced Fire Risk Assessment Training, the Fire Door Inspector course and, in 2025, achieved the Fire Qualification Level 4 Award in Fire Risk Assessment.

Steve became lead fire risk assessor for the company’s commercial client base and several property management companies across the North East and Yorkshire. As an approved CITB training instructor, Steve also delivered various construction management training courses.

Steve, said: “My proudest business achievement has been the development of others. I was lucky that Carney Consultancy, was able to assist in my career development and once I was in a management position, I always tried to get the same opportunities for others. It is always heartwarming when a former colleague thanks you for helping them achieve their goals, that’s always a nice gesture.

“The way the company is structured with a clear succession plan for when older members of staff, like myself, retire, means Carney Consultancy can continue long into the futures.”

Angela Carney, managing director at Carney Consultancy, said:

“I have known Julie for over 20 years. When she was made redundant in 2012, she accepted a position with us. Julie has been invaluable, helping with all admin training bookings and, for years, did the company accounts.

“Steve was first trainee consultant we took on and he then helped me to train other colleagues. Since being with Carney Consultancy he has completed the PTTLS Teaching & Learning qualification, to deliver training and the NEBOSH Fire Safety and Management Certificate and various other fire qualifications to be our senior fire consultant. He really led the way. Steve has been crucial in training all our other fire risk assessors including three ex firemen who work freelance for us and he has trained all our fire door inspectors.

“Both Steve and Julie have been stabilising, consistent members of the team, who played a key role in our growth. They ensured that their knowledge has been passed on to the wider team, meaning there are no gaps in learning. We are all sad to see them go but wish them the very best in their retirement.”
