Connectivity At The Heart Of Esh Construction's Infrastructure Projects

Issue 128

Across Barton-upon-Humber, Guisborough and Middlesbrough, Esh Construction is delivering infrastructure projects with connectivity at their heart, strengthening communities and supporting long-term growth through investment in public realm, active travel and transport infrastructure.

Major transport improvements set for Barton-upon-Humber

A £5.1 million programme of transport and connectivity improvements has commenced in Barton-upon-Humber, with Esh delivering the scheme on behalf of North Lincolnshire Council.

The project will strengthen links between residential areas, the town centre and Barton railway station, while making sustainable travel more attractive.

Works will be delivered in phases across the town, beginning at Whitecross Street and Tofts Road. Alongside highway and junction upgrades, the scheme will introduce safer crossings and improved walking and cycling infrastructure to connect communities, schools and key destinations.

A new Mobility Hub at Barton railway station will provide upgraded paving, waiting facilities and covered cycle storage. The investment is designed to create a seamless journey for rail users and support sustainable travel.

The project will also provide opportunities for local people through social value initiatives focused on education, skills and employment.

Transformation is gathering pace in Guisborough

While work gets underway in Barton, significant progress is already being made in Guisborough, where Esh’s civil engineering division is delivering two improvement schemes on behalf of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Together, the projects represent a £9.3 million investment in the town, enhancing the town centre and active travel network.

In the town centre, new paving has been installed, pedestrian routes improved and preparations are underway for market stalls to return. The reopening of the pedestrian crossing has allowed work to continue on Westgate and Chaloner Street, maintaining momentum on the programme.

Designed to improve accessibility and create a more welcoming environment, the improvements include upgraded pavements, new street furniture, enhanced lighting and a new pedestrian crossing. Once complete, the works will support local businesses, improve visitor experience and create a vibrant public space.

Progress continues on a walking and cycling route linking Guisborough town centre with Guisborough Forest Visitor Centre at Pinchinthorpe. Recent milestones include the completion of raised table crossings at Staindale and Campion Drive, while installation is underway at Falcon Way. New footways, drainage improvements and safer crossings are being delivered, encouraging active travel and connectivity.

Alongside the physical improvements, the project is creating lasting benefits beyond construction. Through its social value commitments, Esh has supported Newcastle Rugby Foundation’s Tackling Health programme, helping local children develop healthier habits through rugby and wellbeing sessions. The programme reported that 68% of participants felt more confident making healthy lifestyle choices, while 70% were inspired to take part in more sport.

Vital bridge refurbishment completed in Middlesbrough

Elsewhere in Teesside, Esh has completed a refurbishment programme at the A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange in Middlesbrough, extending the lifespan of the 54-year-old bridge.

Delivered in partnership with Middlesbrough Council, the scheme included concrete repairs beneath the bridge, replacement waterproofing and expansion joints, carriageway resurfacing and the installation of new kerbs and footways. New pedestrian parapets and guardrails were also installed.

Completed while maintaining access on one of Middlesbrough’s busiest routes, the project has enhanced the resilience of a key piece of infrastructure and secured an important connection for motorists, pedestrians and communities. The bridge and A174 slip roads reopened following completion of the works.

Together, these projects demonstrate how infrastructure investment supports communities, accessibility and long-term growth. Whether creating better public spaces, encouraging active travel or maintaining vital transport links, Esh Construction continues to deliver lasting benefits across the regions it serves.
