Everyone wants more leads. Very few businesses have a proper plan for what happens when one arrives.
It’s one of the most common conversations we have. A business invests in a new website, puts budget behind paid advertising, works on its search visibility, and then waits. Enquiries come in. Some convert. Others quietly disappear. Nobody’s quite sure why, and nobody’s really looking.
The truth is, most businesses think about their sales and marketing in silos. Someone owns the top of the funnel. Someone else handles the enquiries. And the bit in between, the journey from first click to signed contract, is often left to chance.
The funnel nobody looks at end to end
The path a potential customer takes, from a search term to a conversation with your team, has more gaps in it than most business owners realise. SEO, PPC, and AI search get the right visitor to your door. What happens next is a different question entirely.
Your website is doing a sales job whether you think of it that way or not. The tone of your content, how you position your services, and something as simple as the label on a call to action button all influence whether a visitor takes the next step or quietly moves on. A button that says “get in touch” is doing less work than one that says “book a free 30 minute call.” These are not design decisions. They are sales decisions.
Where leads go to die
The enquiry lands. Someone picks it up, eventually. There’s no CRM record, no follow up, no visibility on where it went. A week later it’s forgotten.
Dormant leads are not dead leads. Most businesses have a warmer pipeline sitting untouched than they’d care to admit. Basic CRM discipline, simple automation, and a structured nurture sequence can recover revenue that’s currently being left on the table. It doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to exist.
We’ve seen this pattern repeatedly, and it usually has nothing to do with the quality of the product or service. The business is good. The process just isn’t there.
The part nobody wants to say out loud
You can drive the right traffic to a well-built, well-positioned website and still lose the business because the internal sales process lets it down. At that point, no amount of additional marketing spend will fix the problem.
This is where honest conversations matter. We’ve always been straightforward about what we do well and where a specialist adds more value. For PPC and SEO, that often means working alongside partners like ROAR Digital Marketing, who bring the kind of rigour, data, and commitment that a properly managed campaign actually needs. Three months isn’t long enough to judge PPC. Walking away too early is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes we see.
The question worth asking
Are your leads getting the follow up they deserve? Does your team have what they need to convert them? Is anyone looking at the whole picture?
Sales is not a dirty word. It is the logical end point of every marketing decision you have ever made. Treat it like one conversation, from the first search to the signed contract, and the results tend to follow.
