Chris Main - Recently appointed General Manager at the Grand Hotel, Gosforth Park
What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry?
I originally had no interest in working in the sector and actually started my career on the family fishing boat catching salmon in the Summer and crab and lobster in the Winter.
I finally joined Linden Hall as a night porter where I was inspired by the Head Concierge, Dean Maddison, to become a golden keys concierge. I found I loved the industry and over the next few years worked across all departments before deciding I wanted to be a General Manager. My first GM position came at Horton Grange before I moved to Doxford Hall and then back to Linden Hall. It has been a very enjoyable journey.
Tell us about your current role?
The Grand Hotel, Gosforth Park is an iconic property celebrating its 60th birthday. I met Simon Powell, the Director for Elite Venue Selection and was hugely impressed with his passion and plans for the venue.
We have 232 bedrooms, huge conference and banqueting facilities as well as a fantastic Health Club with 600 members.
I couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome by our fantastic long serving team.
What are the biggest challenges you face in running a Hotel?
Ultimately keeping customers happy whilst exceeding expectations and offering the best level of service.
What has been your most memorable career experience to date?
Looking after Take That for 11 nights whilst at Seaham Hall was pretty special.
How do you handle difficult guests?
Listen, evaluate the situation and treat customers with respect. It is vitally important to be on the front foot and also empower staff to deal with things.
What trends are shaping the future of hospitality?
AI reservation calls and self service check ins are becoming ever more prevalent but my preference remains for the personal touch and traditional service.
What is the best piece of business advice you have been given?
Never judge a book by its cover. Also be the best person you can be.
What does the future hold?
Having worked in both country house hotels and wedding venues I am aiming for longevity within my role here and to enjoy working in a hotel which offers amazing hospitality.
Who are your Heroes and Mentors?
I have always admired Tyson Fury having watched his return from clinical depression to becoming a World Heavyweight Champion again.
On the work front Peter Llellwyn was someone I could always ask for advice whilst he was General Manager at Close House and then a Regional Manager with MacDonald Hotels.
How do you like to unwind?
I like to escape with my wife and two children in our touring caravan.
My guilty pleasure is playing Football Manager on the Xbox.
