You’ve likely wondered whether having a mentor could make a difference for you, in your Business as a Founder or in your Career as a Professional. But before you jump in, it’s really important to understand what mentoring is-and of course what it isn’t.
A mentor is someone who shares their experience, asks thoughtful questions, and helps you see possibilities you might not recognise on your own. A mentor won’t give you a to-do list, solve your problems or tell you exactly what decisions to make but they will stand by your side, be a critical friend, challenge you and most importantly celebrate your wins.
This is very different from coaching, advising, or consulting. Each of these still absolutely have their place and can be more appropriate in some situations than mentoring, so it’s super important to recognise these differences to choose the most suitable route for yourself. A coach is often focused on improving specific skills or performance, with clear metrics and goals. An advisor offers direct guidance or recommendations based on their expertise. A consultant usually provides solutions to a problem or helps implement a plan. Mentoring, is relational and ongoing-it’s about your growth, perspective, and long-term development rather than immediate results.
Engaging with a mentor means entering a partnership where you are supported, challenged, and inspired. It’s a chance to learn from someone who’s walked similar paths, ask questions you might hesitate to ask elsewhere, and gain insights that only experience can provide.
Mentoring is about being asked questions, so that you find your answers, your way for your career and/or your business. Discovering your own answers, your way, will bring you calmness, clarity, choices and confidence to accelerate your personal and professional growth.
