Prominent law firm Cartmell Shepherd is continuing to grow its team with the appointment of a new trainee solicitor – the 10th individual to receive their backing.
Tom Miller has joined the agricultural property team based at Rosehill in Carlisle. He was born and bred in the city, attended Nelson Thomlinson School, and comes from a farming family so his first role in the company’s team is perfectly placed.
“I’ve was interested in the law from an early age,” said Tom. “I knew in secondary school that this is what I wanted to do. My mum worked at Carlisle Magistrates Court and I had the opportunity, both there and at the Crown Court, to see the inner workings of the legal system.
“I went to Northumbria University to do a law degree. I always saw Cartmell Shepherd as one of the leading firms in the area so it was a straightforward decision to apply to work with them.
“Cartmell Shepherd put me through my University of Law Legal Practice Course and now I’m excited to start working with the team.”
Mark Jackson, Director at Cartmell Shepherd Solicitors, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Tom to the rural property team for his first seat with us.
“It’s a real pleasure to support talented individuals at the very start of their legal careers and Tom has hit the ground running. With Tom joining us, we now have a total of 10 trainees across the firm – something we’re incredibly proud of.
“We invest a great deal of hard work, time and dedication into nurturing our trainees, helping them grow into confident, capable solicitors. We wish Tom, and all our trainees, the very best as they continue their journey with us.”
Tom will spend the next six months with the company’s agricultural property team, based at the Rosehill offices. After that, he will focus on other specialisms as he completes his two-year training contract.
“I am really keen on the agricultural side,” he added. “My grandparents farmed so I know how important the industry is in Cumbria.”
Tom also brings experience from working with Citizens Advice while at university: “We saw people who were really struggling and it taught us to work in quick fire interviews and really empathise with their position. I hope I’m able to carry those skills forward.”
Outside work, Tom’s a bit of a history fan, particularly the Roman era, and is a keen reader, with sci-fi and non fiction on his book pile. He’s also an enthusiastic fell walker and skier.
Cartmell Shepherd Solicitors works with clients across Cumbria, Northumberland and nationally. It has seven offices, with two in Carlisle, as well as Brampton, Penrith, Cockermouth, Haltwhistle and Hexham.
The firm’s full range of legal services is available from all of its offices, delivered by its team of more than 40 solicitors.
